I think carrying a weapon should be compulsory. I think every American should have the ability to return fire in their everyday lives. Plus studies show that gun ownership helps moderate and end disputes effectively and quickly so a brief confrontation and it's on to the next class or whatever.

It's a dangerous culture though. Admittedly most of those that commit the most heinous crimes with firearms obtain said arms illegally, but by this standard they no longer have to go through the hassle of doing so. Someone has a gun hanging out of their pants at a bar is pretty easily accessible to anyone that walks by, it just seems irresponsible to allow firearms in an environment where lack of discretion is encouraged and substances that curtail good judgement are imbibed.
