Speaking as someone who was following the sport closely when this fight happened, I can tell you there was a huge amount of hype for Cooney and his power. People were talking about Holmes getting knocked back to Africa with this fight. But Holmes schooled and dismantled him with relative ease.

Anyways, Cooney was/is a decent guy who was not to blame for the hype. Full props to him for the exellent work he has done in support of retired boxers.

The former undisputed Cruiserweight champion and future heavyweight champ. Looks like he's got Wlad at Stamford bridge on June 20th.

The ever-cunning King orchestrated this one so that Black vs. White = Green. Cooney wanted no part of that, but the 10 million he got wasn't all that bad. I do some strange thing for 10 mil!!!

Some good names on here - people like Cooney, Audley etc were hyped big time. Nothing wrong with that (because the young Mike Tyson was the most hyped fighter who had not even competed at world level that I've ever seen) ....... it's those who donlt deserve the hype who annoy us.

For the record, I think the very first hype job in history (apart from the Great White Hopes against Johnson) was Duane Bobick ...... anyone remember him?

I might say Bob Sapp. You look at him and the guy's a monster. I saw some of those K-1 bouts and apart from size he had nothing. He could lay on an opponent, sap him and tap him a couple times and win. But anyone who knew how to stay away long enough could slap him around once he got tired. I remember him screaming, "I want Tyson!" Even that faded version of Tyson would have KILLED him. Sapp was too slow to touch Mike and let's be honest, Mike fought a hundred tomato cans who looked just like him.
