Is it worth giving it a go or would it only be beneficial to sparring?

Not unless you plan to fight amateurs
headgear, no, not unless you want to look like a retard. some guys wear a mouthguard though to reduce their air intake and up their wind. I never found it helpful though. But I suppose if done right, like with a double, it'll help. (But I hate doubles anyway, monkey likes em. to each his own.)
Unless you are prone to seizures, I would have to say no.
If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.
Its not traditional, but not unheard of.
I've heard of a number of fighters who wear them, not as a cardio vascualr exercise, but just to become accustomed to their headgear before competition.

I've never been forced to do it but I do know fo a coach who got his guys to do full training sessions in head gear and wearing a mouthguard.
He coached amateurs obviously and wanted it to become normal to them to be able to train hard wearing it without it phasing them in any way.
I have to admit - even though i have a nice light, well ventilated headguard - in the Australian summer it can get hot after a few rounds with the headguard on.
You loose a lot of body heat from your heat so if you compete in warm climates maybe it's not such a bad idea to get used to it!
Headgaurd while hitting abag?? Bag got arms and hit you back now....i use a mouthgaurd sometimes never hurd of anyone using Headguard
Actually when i first went into a boxing gym i did hit the Heavybag, with a Headgear on to get used to it. Because it feels weird the first time you put it on. But after having a few sparring sessions i never wore a Headgear outside the ring again.
