Boxing Preview: Diaconu vs. Pascal For WBC Title

A hotly anticipated local clash takes place tonight at the Bell Centre in Montreal and the stakes couldn’t be higher as Adrian Diaconu faces Jean Pascal for the WBC light heavyweight title.

The fight has garnered massive attention in Quebec and is the biggest fight of the year so far in the province’s largest city.

Diaconu, 26-0 (15), won the interim WBC crown with a hard fought unanimous decision in his native Romania a year ago against Chris Henry and supporters of “The Shark” are confident that the stocky 31 year old will come through this first defense with flying colors.

Challenger Pascal, 22-1 (15), has ruffled Diaconu’s feathers a few times with incendiary comments during the press build up but the 26 year native born Haitian has the disadvantage of coming up from super middle for the first time during his four year pro career.

Pascal is also just one bout removed from a loss to Carl Froch in a wild slugfest for the vacant WBC 168 pound belt in December but is counting on in advantages in height and quickness to win the fight against Diaconu.

An interesting bout at cruiserweight supports the main event as southpaw ex-Commonwealth king Troy Ross, 21-1 (15), meets iron-chinned American veteran Michael Simms, 20-10-1 (13), in a ten rounder.
