In Moscow last night, Ukrainian Heavyweight – Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight Titles scoring a Unanimous Points victory over Alexander Povetkin of Russia.
Povetkin’s tactic seemed to be to launch himself at the torso of the Champion like a bull at a gate (!) with Klitschko then smothering the Russian by hanging over his shoulders. The rest of the time, Klitschko kept Povetkin at bay with his long-reaching jab.
A left-right followed by a bundling over – sees Povetkin on the canvas in round seven, which would turn out to be the first of three times during this frame. Knockdown two is difficult to see. There’s a lot of grappling between the two men and Klitschko lands with more than one uppercut before Povetkin is down again mid-way through the round.
Klitschko lands more uppercuts, but the third knockdown looks more of a shoving down rather than from a shot and Povetkin protests as he is counted.
He is on the canvas again in the ninth but this time it is clearly a shove and he is not counted.€
In the eleventh Povetkin is rocked by head-shots and ends up on the canvas after another shoving down. He is not counted and Klitschko gets a point deducted.
In the twelfth and final round, Povetkin has to stop to get his glove taped then once fighting resumes he is almost swung to the canvas with a minute remaining.
At the end of the fight, Klitschko has a bruised swelling under the right eye and Povetkin is bruised and swollen around both eyes and cut across the nose.
Klitschko scored 119-104 on all three judge’s scorecards. The last time he went the distance was in July 2011 against British Heavyweight – David Haye.
His record now stands at 61 wins (51 by KO) and 3 losses (3 by KO)
