Last night at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL Celestino Caballero of Panama successfully defended his WBA Super Bantamweight title for the first time, outslugging former Mexican champion Ricardo Castillo in a ninth round stoppage victory.
5 foot 11 inch tall Caballero towered over the 5 foot 5 Castillo and that, coupled with the champion's southpaw style, was too much for the younger brother of two weight world champion Jose Luis Castillo to surmount. After the contest became increasingly one sided, Castillo was teetering on the edge of getting knocked out until Caballero forced a stoppage at 2:02 of round nine.
Caballero, 26-2 (19), has now won seven bouts in a row and will likely go hunting for a big money unification bout before the year is out. Castillo, 27-4 (17), has now dropped two straight and must rethink his strategy if he is to contend for genuine world honors.
