Boxing In Canada: Weekend Results

There were two good cards north of the border this weekend and we get the show on the road at the Convention Centre in Winnipeg where light middle Larry “Razor” Sharpe stopped Mexican veteran Mauro Lucero in the fourth frame on Friday night.

Sharpe, 22-4 (10), a former Canadian Middleweight Champion who unsuccessfully challenged Englishman Scott Dann for the Commonwealth crown two years ago, came into the bout as the reigning WBA Fedcentro Light Middleweight titlist.

The 34 year old southpaw from Pine Falls, Manitoba proved to have too much in the gloves for the 36 year old Lucero, 43-13-1 (29), a former Mexican champion at light welter who failed to lift the WBC Lightweight belt from Cesar Bazan in 1998.

On the undercard, local super middle campaigner John McLean, 3-18-5 (1), overcame the odds to force a six round draw upon Minnesota’s Christopher Holt, 14-9-1 (9), in a rematch.

McLean had come into the bout riding a six bout losing streak and ironically had started his career off in 2003 with a second round KO loss to Holt, a seven fight veteran at the time, and thus gains a measure of revenge against the American.

On Saturday at the Civic Center in Brantford, Ontario, 6 foot 7 inch Toronto based heavyweight Raymond “Mt Kilimanjaro” Olubowale, 6-2-1 (4), stopped American veteran southpaw Galen Brown, 30-8-1 (19), in the sixth round of a scheduled eight rounder.

26 year old Brown gave up seven inches in height and over 42 pounds in weight to Olubowale but could not convert his 11 year youth advantage to overcome the sizable adversity he was faced with.

Also on the bill, promising Indianapolis based Mississauga native welterweight Mike Post, 17-1-1 (13), won his fourth contest on the bounce by outpointing fellow Indiana boxer Ruben Galvan, 27-13-3 (10), after six rounds.
