Three months after a disastrous failure to make weight for a challenge to World Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell, Joan Guzman returned to the ring last night at Coliseo Carlos Teo Cruz in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to outbox WBA Fedelatin Lightweight titlist Ameth Diaz over twelve rounds.
The bout was also an eliminator for the WBA title and the Brooklyn based Guzman, born in Santo Domingo, proved to be a step too far for hard-punching Panamanian Diaz to handle.
Diaz began the bout targeting the body of Guzman but the former WBO Super Bantam/Super Feather Champion took control of the action, countering his rival and beating Diaz to the punch time and time again.
After the smoke cleared, Guzman won the judge's scorecards by margins of 120-108 and 119-109 twice. The 32 year old improves to 29-0 (17) with a strong display of boxing after more than a year of inactivity.
Diaz loses for only the second time in his last ten appearances, dropping to 25-8 (19).
On the undercard, Argenis Mendez, 13-1 (8), another Dominican now living in Brooklyn, outpointed durable Mexico City man Arturo Gomez, 15-11-3 (6), over eight rounds at super featherweight.
