The Big Debate: Fernando Vargas vs. Javier Castillejo

By Sergio Martinez August 20th, 2005 All Boxing Debates
Well fight fans, welcome to the latest edition of “The Big Debate”. We have another great fight weekend with HBO bringing us a solid card live from the All State Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. The main event features the Aztec Warrior, “El Feroz”, Ferocious

Fernando Vargas, (25-2-0 with 22 KOs) taking on the Spaniard, “El Lince de Parla”, Javier Castillejo (58-5-0 with 39 KOs). At first glimpse, it seems that the twenty-seven year old two-time world champion from Oxnard, California will have an easy night against the thirty-seven year old Castillejo. Add in the fact that “El Lince De Parla” has been involved in thirty-six more fights than Vargas and the odds get even better. The thing to remember fight fans is that “El Feroz” has taken on nothing but topnotch competition, and has been involved in some brutal wars within those twenty-seven fights, taking something out of him. This fight is really between to naturally big and strong junior middleweights that are past their best days. The very interesting question here is, at this stage of their careers, who has more left? There is only one way to find out! Here is why I think that “El Feroz” Ferocious Fernando Vargas will win this Saturday night. More...

Vicente “Chente” Escobedo: Left Hook Crushes Matias

By Sergio Martinez August 20th, 2005 All Boxing Results, Ringside Boxing

Just moments ago, live on Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo” boxing series from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas the 130-pound prospect and former 2004 US Olympian Vicente “Chente” Escobedo improved his record to 6-0 with 6 knockouts. Escobedo took out the Dominican Juan Manuel Matias, who is now 8-3 with 3 knockouts, in just two

rounds. It was a beautiful display of boxing’s most basic combination, the one-two, as “Chente” employed a pulverizing, nose breaking, face hurting, eye watering left jab that was followed by a straight, fast, hard right hand. This combination really set the pace in the first round. Matias felt the heavy leather early on and decided to ride his bicycle. Escobedo stalked him throughout the round, hurting Juan Manuel twice during the initial frame. More...

Lazcano Comes Back With A First Round Knockout!

By Sergio Martinez August 20th, 2005 All Boxing Results

Tonight’s main event televised on Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo” boxing series featured the return of the “Hispanic Causing Panic”, with Juan Lazcano, 141 ¼ pounds, destroying Marco Angel Perez, 141-pounds inside of one round. Lazcano, who was coming off a fourteen month layoff after having a disagreement with his boss Oscar De La Hoya, came out with his hands held high, and showed a lot of head and upper body movement. Juan looked a little tight during the first minute of the fight, while Perez let his hands go. Lazcano parried, blocked, and sidestepped most of the incoming traffic, and looked effective the way he moved his upper body very well. Then, as the “Hispanic Causing Panic” ducked under a wide hook, he came up with a beautifully placed uppercut to the chin of Marco Angel, instantly putting the Mexican down. It was painfully obvious that Perez was not going to beat the count. With the win, Lazcano improves to 34-3-1 with 25 knockouts, but more importantly is boxing again and will hopefully be ready for major fights within the next six months.

Humberto Armando Soto: One Tough Alternative

By Sergio Martinez August 19th, 2005 All Boxing Articles

This Saturday, HBO televises live from the All States Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, the main event featuring “El Feroz” Ferocious Fernando Vargas locking horns with the Spaniard, Javier “El Lince de Parla” Castillejo. Although it is always a pleasure to watch Vargas fight, and Castillejo is no slouch, a lot more is at stake in the televised under card bout. Houstonian and 2000 Olympic silver medallist Ricardo “Rocky” Juarez is vying for the interim WBC featherweight title and will be taking on Humberto Armando “La Zorrita” Soto. Juarez, originally slated to face Injin Chi, now has a whole new set of problems in the form of Soto. “Rocky” was preparing for an all out, stand in front of you and exchange leather type of fighter in Injin Chi, but will now have a much more mobile and creative boxer to deal with in Humberto. I’m not saying that “La Zorrita” is Mohammed Ali, but he is definitely not Chi. More...

As expected, the Laredo Entertainment Center in Laredo, Texas was overflowing with energy and rowdiness of close to five thousand loud and fanatical fans packed the building. You could feel the intensity as the Mexican and Mexican-American fans were starved for just a glimpse of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

,with the hope and desire that his father would be present at the event. Then, it happened. I walked to Chavez Jr’s dressing room as he was getting ready to walk out for his fight and, as I opened the door, the mythical Mexican legend himself, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was standing in front of me. For a brief second, I froze in time and was speechless. His face bares several battle scars, and his gaze is stoic. I was in the presence of a true legend and actually felt the hairs on the back of my head raise. I presented by credentials and Fernando Beltran, who manages Chavez Jr. immediately recognized me. I was allowed inside the dressing room for some quick shots before the walkout. I took some shots of Junior and Senior, and got the chance speak to a true boxing legend. More...

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: An Entire Country on His Shoulders.

By Sergio Martinez August 12th, 2005 All Boxing Interviews

Translated from Spanish to English by Sergio Martinez.

“I really appreciate the fact that I have so many fans behind me that love my father, so are loyal to me too. It is an honor to be able to have such great people behind me. I am going to continue to fight for the people and show my respect.”-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. intends to continue the great Mexican boxing tradition pioneered by his father.

No doubt that tomorrow night, live from the Laredo Entertainment Center in Laredo, Texas, and televised on Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo” boxing series, the chants of “Julio! Julio! Julio,” will rain down from what is a sold out crowd of over 8,000 fanatical Mexican, and Mexican-American fans. See fight fans, Laredo, Texas, my hometown, is a border city. Mexico, our motherland, is just a stone’s throw away from the battle site of the son of Mexico’s greatest boxing legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Now that the faded ex-three division world champion is all but gone, the entire country of Mexico and all of the Mexican-American fans are getting behind the one that bares his name: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. “I am very happy that the people that followed my father are now following me. I think that it is something very special because that means that they really love my father and are now with me. I think that the Mexican people are very loyal and that they will always be loyal because that is the way we are made to be,” said Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to this writer after today’s weigh-in at the La Posada Hotel in Laredo, Texas. Jorge Paez, Jr.: Another Set of “Big Shoes” to Fill.

By Sergio Martinez August 11th, 2005 All Boxing Interviews

Translated from Spanish to English by Sergio Martinez.

“I was there as a kid when my dad won a world title and remember that I also wanted to be a world champion. I will prove that I can fight and am working very hard to be the best fighter possible.”-Jorge Paez, Jr. is setting out to create a boxing legacy of his own.

On August 12, 2005, live from the Laredo Entertainment Center in Laredo, Texas, Jorge “El Maromerito/El Raton” Paez, Jr. (2-0-0, 2 KOs) will make his United States professional boxing debut on Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo” boxing series. Paez, Jr. is the son of the legendary former featherweight champion Jorge “El Maromero” Paez, best remembered as a tenacious and gutsy Mexican warrior whose bizarre ring outfits, outlandish hairstyles, and extreme ring antics, electrified audiences around the world. Although seen mostly as a wild man, there was a method to “El Maromero’s” madness. He was a highly skilled technician who could box as effectively as he could brawl. Paez possessed solid hand-speed, was heavy-handed, and had a very awkward style that would always keep opponents guessing. All of the “Paez” potential and talent seems to have been passed on to his son. “When people see me fight, they tell me that I can box beautifully, and those same people tell me that I’m a warrior and can really punch. I really can adapt to anyone and any style. I’m a southpaw, but can also fight orthodox equally effective. I’m very talented and have a lot of amateur experience. I had over eighty (amateur) fights, and trained with the Mexican Olympic Team. I’m still very young. I have a lot of time to develop and learn the professional side of the sport correctly. I am taking it one step at a time and am really listening to my trainers and the team around me as they are there for my best interest,” said Jorge Paez, Jr. to this writer after today’s press conference in Laredo, Texas. The Sycuan Way: Boxing’s Newest “Family.”

By Sergio Martinez August 8th, 2005 All Boxing Interviews

"We have been very lucky and have a great team to have been able to secure fighters like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Joan Guzman, Israel Vasquez, and Julio Diaz this fast. We will continue to treat our fighters and team with great respect and they know that they are part of a family."-Glen Quiroga, president of Sycuan boxing operations intends for Sycuan to make a big impact on the sport.

On August 9, 2005, at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California, and televised on ESPN 2’s “Tuesday Night Fights” series, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, boxing’s newest promotional company, will host a boxing show to honor the United States military men and women who have, and continue to risk their lives overseas. To my recollection (leave it alone Britkid…lol), this will mark the first time in promotional boxing history that a promoter themselves will purchase the entire gate, approximately 10,000 seats, and turn them over to the Camp Pendleton officials for the benefit of active duty military personal and their families. This is not exactly the way that “promoters” do business, but the Sycuan Tribe considers themselves as more of a “family” than “promoters.” “Everyone that is part of our family is taken care of and we make sure that all of our people are looked after. That is why Julio Diaz, Mia St. John, and Butterbean have taken less money and agreed to do the fights at Camp Pendleton. These fighters want to contribute to what is a great benefit and that is to show support and respect for our troops,” said Michael Marley who is the VP/Director of Public Relations for Sycuan Boxing. Round by Round: Jeff Lacy vs. Robin Reid.

By Sergio Martinez August 7th, 2005 All Round by Round
Tonight in Tampa, Florida, hometown champion Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy took on Robin "Grim Reaper" Reid in defense of his IBF super middleweight championship. This would be the fight in which we realized that Lacy was a pretender, or the real thing. SaddoBoxing wraps up its big fight coverage of this event

with the round by round account of every punch thrown. Check out all the action as it happened, and don't hesitate to get involved in the many heated discussions happening about this fight in our forum right now!

Round one: Both fighters come out in orthodox stances. Lacy, working behind a jab is trying to work his way inside. Robin Reid is holding his guard very high and is constantly turning to his left side. Jeff Lacy lands a straight right hand, which Reid takes well as he dances away. Reid with his left hand very low, uses his shoulder to roll punches, trying to constantly turn Lacy to his left. Robin lands a shot to the back of lacy’s head, which gets a warning from the referee. The “Grim Reaper” just does not look like he is comfortable. Lacy connects with solid jabs and follows them with a right hand. Reid continues to try and keep Jeff out of range with his jab….. Reid lands a good right to the body as the round ends.

Score: 10-9 Lacy. More...

Demetrius \”Gladiator\” Hopkins Wins by Knockout!

By Sergio Martinez August 4th, 2005 All Boxing Results

The main event of tonight's HBO Latino's "Boxeo De Oro" boxing series featured Demetrius "Gladiator" Hopkins, nephew of former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins, taking on Paul Delgado. Hopkins, now with a record of 20-0-1 (with 7 KOs), showed rare power as he dropped Delgado a total of three times en route to an eighth round TKO. Demetrius displayed a nice combination of boxing and brawling as he showed some good speed, movement, and solid footwork. The "Gladiator" out maneuvered, out thought, and out brawled the game, but limited Delgado. In the eighth and final round, Hopkins landed at will and finally caught his foe with a solid, crushing hook to the chin that sent Paul crashing to the canvas. Delgado beat the count, but his wobbly legs, and glassy eyes would prompted the referee to call the fight. It was a great performance, and a solid win for the "Gladiator" as he continues to try and make his case as one of the best 140-pounders on the planet. It is the deepest division in boxing, so we will see how far Hopkins can go.

Larry Mosley Wins \”Boxeo De Oro\” Debut.

By Sergio Martinez August 4th, 2005 All Boxing Results

The promising Larry Mosley, who made his HBO Latino debut, won by TKO in the fourth round over Alexis Division. It was an entertaining scrap that featured a lot two way action. Mosley, who is not a relation to "Sugar" Shane Mosley, showed great speed, technique, and a solid attack as he roasted Division's ribcage. As the rounds went on, Larry asserted himself and took over the fight until the contest was stopped. We will see if Mosley can live up to his talent and abilities.

SaddoBoxing will very shortly bring you the news of Demetrius Hopkins' fight with Paul Delgado that is happening right now.

\”Rock\” Allen: Wins Debut Fight.

By Sergio Martinez August 4th, 2005 All Boxing Results

Tonight, the first televised bout of HBO Latino's "Boxeo De Oro" boxing series featured former 2004 United States Olympian "Rock" Allen, making his professional debut. Allen, who won by first round TKO, looks like a very exciting young fighter as he rushed his opponent showing an array of punches in his arsenal. Allen looked impressive as he attacked the head and the body with equal intensity. "Rock" did get hit his share of times, but took the flush shots well. It looks like Golden Boy Promotions has yet another young and exciting fighter in their stable. Allen looks like a promising young fighter and we will see how his career progresses.

Stay tuned to SaddoBoxing for more news and results from tonight's fight card at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City coming soon.

The Big Debate: Jeff Lacy vs. Robin Reid.

By Sergio Martinez August 3rd, 2005 All Boxing Debates
On Saturday, August 6, 2005, live from Tampa Bay, Florida, and televised on Showtime, Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy will put his IBF 168-pound trinket on the line against perennial contender, and former WBC champion, Robin “Grim Reaper” Reid. This will be

the third defense of Lacy’s title, and should be the toughest test of his young career. I said should be. It is age versus youth, and strength against guile in this one, so let just get right to the point. Here is why I think Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy will stop Reid from becoming a two-time world champion. The “Grim Reaper” has savvy and “championship” experience on his side, as he has fought for various belts in the past, and made four defenses of the WBC super middleweight title. The problem is that he won that belt in 1996. Reid is a mobile boxer-puncher that has some solid skills and appears to have a sturdy set of whiskers, having never felt the canvas in his professional career. The thing to remember is that he has fought forty-three professional fights, and his wheels are now thirty-four-years-old. Add the fact that, as of late, the “Grim Reaper” has been extremely inactive, as this will only be his third fight in the past twenty months, making ring rust and conditioning definite concerns.

Check in for SaddoBoxing’s Big Debate feature as Sergio Martinez takes on Curtis McCormick on the subject of the IBF super middleweight title fight between champion Jeff Lacy and challenger Robin Reid. More...

Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy: An Active Champion? What a Concept!

By Sergio Martinez August 1st, 2005 All Boxing Previews
On August 6, 2005, live from the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa Bay, Florida, former United States Olympian, and current IBF super middleweight titlist Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy will defend his crown, which he won on October 2, 2004, via an impressive eighth round TKO over solid veteran contender Syd “The Jewel” Vanderpool. The contest, televised by Showtime, is part of their “Saturday Fight Night” boxing series. This will mark the

third defense of his title, and the fourth fight that Lacy will be part of in the past ten months. A champion that is actually active and defending his title? What a concept! In an era when champions and superstars the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, Jr, Kostya Tszyu, and every heavyweight champion in Don King’s stable fight only once a year, it is refreshing to see a young exciting champion like Lacy staying busy and giving us great, exciting fights. Jorge \”Travieso\” Arce: New Interim WBC Flyweight Champion.

By Sergio Martinez July 31st, 2005 All Boxing Results

Last night, from La Paz, Mexico and in front of thousands of his countrymen, Jorge "Travieso" Arce (now 40-3-1, with 30 KOs) captured the interim WBC flyweight title via a three-round destruction of tough and rugged Angel Priolo (now 30-2-0, with 20 KOs). Arce's all out action style and heavy-hands overwhelmed Priolo, prompting the referee to stop the contest. With the win, "Travieso" has cleared the way for the proposed rematch against Hussein Hussein, which is scheduled for October 8, 2005. The first bout, which was won by Arce via tenth-round TKO, was a classic war of attrition which saw constant two way action between both gladiators. The return bout should be another thriller.
