At the Imperial Banqueting Suite, Bilston, last night, Errol Johnson – BCB (Black Country Boxing) Promotions hosted a boxing event featuring five contests.
In the headliner – Ricky Summers of Tipton secured an 80-72 points’ win against late opponent Gonzalo Romeno of Madrid, Spain. Summers was to face Coventry’s Joe Sherriff for the vacant Midlands Area Light-Heavyweight Title, but Sherriff was forced to pull out due to illness.
Summers now has 14 wins and just one loss to his record – that being a points defeat to Frank Buglioni at the O2 Arena in July when the pair fought for the British Title.
Saturdays’ show featured two debutants making their professional bow – in the form of Nathan Heaney and Anthony Woolery.
Before boxing commenced, there was a ten bell salute for Reagan Asbury (RIP) who was fatally stabbed at the Walsall boxing show in October.
Boxing Results as follows.
Ricky Summers (Tipton) v Gonzalo Romeno (Madrid, Spain)
8 x 3 Light-Heavyweight Contest
Spanish opponent Romeno was on the canvas in the second round and didn’t give Summers any problems in this eight-rounder, the Tipton man winning seven of the eight rounds and sharing just the third round – but it left him frustrated afterwards. Having trained for Sherriff – he was hungry for a more challenging contest.
Summers wins on points 80-72
Jason Welborn (Tividale) v Christian Hoskin-Gomez (Plymouth via Cadiz, Spain)
6 x 3 Middleweight Contest
The best fight of the night (in my opinion) A cracking toe-to-toe fight from these two experienced boxers. Rounds 2 and 3 were particularly thrilling but Hoskin sustains a cut to the left brow in the fourth frame.
Accurate punching from Welborn secures him the 60-55 points win.
James Beech Jnr (Bloxwich) v Elvis Guillen (Barcelona, Spain via Nicaragua)
6 x 3 Featherweight Contest
An accidental clash of heads in round 3 sees Beech cut on the left brow and Guillen cut to the head.
Beech secured the points win 60-54
Nathan Heaney (Stoke-on-Trent) (Debut) v Darryl Sharp (Middleton)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest
Tall debutant Heaney does well against tough Sharp but does get drawn in to Sharps goading in round 3 and starts to show boat in response. Urged to ignore the experienced boxer’s attempts to distract – Heaney lands some decent body-shots in the fourth round and wins his first pro fight on points 40-36
Anthony Woolery (Wolverhampton) (Debut) v Dmitrij Kalinovskij (Klaipeda, Lithuania)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest
A tough first outing for debutant Woolery who struggled against the solid performance from Kalinovskij although the Lithuanian did have his gum-shield punched out in the second round.
Kalinovskij wins on points 40-37
