The European Union Super Middleweight title changed hands on Sunday as Spanish southpaw Gabriel Campillo pulled off an upset of reigning champion Lolenga Mock at the Holmegaardsskolen in Kokkedal, Denmark.
30 year old Campillo, 17-2 (6), was coming off a narrow loss to European Champion Karo Murat by majority decision last September but the man from Madrid proved to have more in the tank than the iron-chinned Mock, taking a 115-114, 115-113 and 116-111 unanimous decision after 12 hard rounds.
For the 36 year old Mock, 28-12-1 (12), this is likely just another career setback to overcome as the Congo born Aarhus resident has endured many such disappointments in a still viable career.
Mock fought his way out of Kinshasa, going 17-0 to start his career before losing a ABU Super Middle tile clash to Joseph Marwa in Tanzania in 1998.
The next five years was a roller coaster ride for the Congo native, who relocated to Denmark in 2002, but one of Mock’s top moments as a professional came when he went all the way up to cruiserweight and floored future world champion David Haye before suffering the only stoppage loss of his career.
Mock hit his stride in 2004, winning the EBA Light Heavyweight title against Giovanni Alvarez before dropping back down to super middle and capturing the WBO Intercontinental crown with a tenth round stoppage of former world champion Charles Brewer.
In his second title defense, Mock was outboxed by future world champion Lucian Bute but bounced back to annex the vacant European Union crown, stopping Franck Mezaache in 2006.
Mock defended that belt once before dropping a very close vacant WBA Intercontinental title contest to Stjepan Bozic in Croatia. Undaunted, Mock came back to regain the European Union crown in 2008, winning a split decision against Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye last March, ultimately losing the title to Campillo on Sunday.
