  • WBA approved special permission for Stanionis to fight Jaron Ennis – World Boxing Association

WBA approved special permission for Stanionis to fight Jaron Ennis – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee approved special permission for the welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis to unify his title against IBF champion Jaron Ennis on April 12 in Atlantic City.

The companies TGB Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, representatives of both fighters, sent the formal request to the WBA. In turn, as the regulations indicate, the pioneer body informed about this request to the team of Stanionis’ mandatory challenger, Shakhram Giyasov, who agreed that the fight between Stanionis and Ennis will take place.

Stanionis has been champion since April 2022, when he defeated Radzhab Butaev, while he defended his crown last year against Gabriel Maestre. His next opponent was supposed to be Giyasov, but in view of the situation, he will be entitled to unify the belts.

As determined by the championships committee and under the rules, the winner of the bout between Stanionis and Ennis will have to face Giyasov in a period not exceeding 120 days after they fight.

Any future situation arising in this case will be resolved under the rules of the pioneer body.

  • WBA approved the creation of the super cruiserweight division  – World Boxing Association

WBA approved the creation of the super cruiserweight division  – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Executive Committee approved the creation of the super cruiserweight division in a vote called by the president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.

This new division will be between 200 and 224 pounds, while it will be located between the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions.

The pioneer organization made several analyses during the last months before thinking about the request and in the end it was submitted to a vote, in which it was approved by the unanimous vote of the executive committee.

The creation of this new weight will mainly help to avoid bouts in which the fighters enter the ring with excessive weight differences, as tends to happen at heavyweight occasionally, where there can be differences of 20 pounds or more.

Fighters considered ” small heavyweights” will have the option to move down to super cruiserweight and seek opportunities against more balanced weight opponents, in the quest to make the sport increasingly fairer.

The WBA ranking committee has already begun working on the creation of the rankings for this weight and the first divisional match-ups will be announced soon.

The WBA will continue to work on making boxing a fairer sport that provides opportunities and fairness to all involved, especially the boxers.

  • WBA approved Wood-Warrington – World Boxing Association

WBA approved Wood-Warrington – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association (WBA), through its championships committee, approved a special permit requested by Matchroom Boxing for featherweight champ Leigh Wood, to fight Josh Warrington.

Wood just regained the 126-pound crown in a rematch against Mauricio Lara last May and has a mandatory fight with Othabek Kholmatov. However, the champion’s team requested special permission from the WBA to make an optional fight against Warrington.

After a review of the case and under various internal rules, the body decided to approve the fight on the condition that the winner, or Wood in case of a draw, will fight Kholmatov no later than 120 days after the bout.

Rule C.16 states that the WBA may modify the periods of mandatory defenses for good cause, either in response to a Special Permit application, or on its own initiative. For its part, the agency may modify or suspend the strict application of these rules when it deems justified in its sole discretion to accommodate special circumstances, as Rule C.46 states. While rule C.47 allows special permits to be granted under specific conditions, as has been the case.

While the Wood-Warrington bout is taking place, Kholmatov will be allowed to make an optional fight against an opponent approved by the championship committee. Any problems or situations that arise in the course of the case will be resolved under WBA rules.

  • WBA Approved Santa Cruz-Vargas and Wood-Lara   – World Boxing Association

WBA Approved Santa Cruz-Vargas and Wood-Lara   – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee approved the joint permit requested by Matchroom Boxing and TGB Promotions to allow featherweight super champion Leo Santa Cruz to face Rey Vargas in a unification fight and featherweight champion Leigh Wood to make a defense against Mauricio Lara.

Both fights were approved with the condition that the super champion will face the champion to define the sole champion of the category within 120 days after the fight between Santa Cruz and Vargas.

It should be noted that the WBA, in the midst of world title reduction plan, ordered the Santa Cruz-Wood last April 6, 2022. On July 11, TGB requested a permit to make the Santa Cruz Vargas, which was denied on July 15 by the championships committee, which called for a purse bid for Santa Cruz-Wood.

On August 12, both companies sent a communication stating that they had reached an agreement and the purse bid was suspended. Subsequently, on the 22nd of that same month, the joint permission was requested in which the Santa Cruz-Vargas and the Wood-Lara were requested, with the commitment that both winners would face each other in the established term to define the only champion.

The Championships Committee made the decision based on the internal rules of the organization. Rule C.16 states that the body may modify the periods of mandatory defenses for good cause, either in response to a request for special permission or on its own initiative.

In addition, Rule C.46 states that the BMA may suspend or modify the strict application of these rules when it deems justified in its sole discretion to accommodate special circumstances. Such reasons include “participating in an optional title defense”, “participating in a bout of recognized importance and significance to the boxing world”, “extending or modifying a mandatory defense period”, or for any reason the Committee and the President deem just.

The WBA sent the resolution to the parties and once both fights are fulfilled there will be no more permits. The next fight must be between the super champion belt holder and the champion, to define the sole monarch of the division.
