Are Negotiations For Cotto vs. Alvarez Almost Finished?
The much anticipated bout between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez occuring this fall should be confirmed sometime this month or early August.
According to sources, Roc Nation Sports, who represents Cotto and Golden Boy Promotions, who represents Alvarez, are reportedly still working out the details on a specific date and venue.
Cotto’s adviser, Gabriel Peñagaricano, has reportedly mentioned a November date for the fight but he also cautioned that the date will be linked to the venue itself.
In the matter of set weight for the bout, it seems like that’s already settled. According to media sources, the contract weight for the fight will be 155 pounds. It will be sold as a weight where neither fighter will have any sort of advantage.
Cotto, who fights as a middleweight has only really fought at that weight against Sergio Martinez; against every other opponent he has come in under 155. Alvarez is considered a super welterweight fighter and has come in at 155 in two occasions, which were both victories, against Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo.
Another matter that is resolved, according to media sources, is that the fight will be broadcast on HBO pay-per-view. The cable company should be excited about this contest as it will most likely generate enormous pay-per-view sales among the Latin community in the United States and boxing aficionados.
Another advantage for HBO is that the winner is most likely going to take on Gennady Golovkin, which will guarantee another huge pay-per-view event for the television company in 2016. (more…)

Miguel Cotto Puts WBC Middleweight Title At Risk Tonight
Miguel Cotto returns to the ring for the first time since capturing the WBC middleweight title against Sergio Martinez one year ago as the Puerto Rican icon faces former world champion Daniel Geale at Barclays Center in Cotto’s adopted hometown of New York.
In his most recent appearance, ex-three weight world titlist Cotto, 39-4 (32), produced a shocking upset by stepping up to 160 pounds and knocking down divisional king Martinez three times in the first round enroute to a stoppage victory when the Argentine switch-hitter didn’t answer the bell for the tenth round.
It did appear that Martinez re-injured a previously damaged knee during the first knockdown and as a fighter whose style completely revolves around tricky footwork, this provided a tremendous advantage to Cotto.
Now, Cotto will have to prove that his debut at middleweight was no fluke by handling the challenge posed by Geale, 31-3 (16), a career middleweight
Geale is coming off a win over fellow Australian Jarrod Fletcher in December following his third round stoppage loss to WBA king Gennady Golovkin last July.
Once the bell rings tonight in New York, the question is will former IBF/WBA champ Geale be able to leverage his size advantage into the winnner’s circle against Cotto, who turned pro as a light welter?
Despite losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, the real handbook on how defeat Cotto was written by Austin Trout, who outboxed “Junito” in December 2012. (more…)

Careful What You Wish For: Johnson Wants Golovkin, Cotto
This past Friday at the Madison Square Garden Theater, Bahamian middleweight contender Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs) captured the WBA International and WBC Silver titles, with a bruising victory against Colombian contender Alex Theran (17-2, 2 KOs).
Johnson thumped the former Olympian Theran over five rounds, dropping him once in the fourth round, then again in the fifth. Theran, who suffered an injury and could not return for the sixth round, was taking a beating before bowing out of the bout.
Rated WBC #8, WBA #12 and IBF #12, Johnson is looking to step up and challenge any of the champions in middleweight division. After beating a solid fighter like Theran, and losing controversially to Curtis Stevens, Johnson is confident he can beat any of the current champions at 160 lb. (more…)

Low PPV Numbers For Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez?
Bob Arum, who is in the process of rehabilitation after undergoing a knee replacement surgery in Los Angeles, was quoted in the press recently as remarking that the Pay-Per-View numbers for Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez were below expectations.
Arum also mentioned that despite the low pay-per-view numbers for the Cotto vs. Martinez bout, what saved them was the $4.7 million in ticket sales.
Lou DiBella, who manages Martinez, was quoted as saying the pay-per-view numbers were affected by other sporting events happening that day, such as the Belmont Stakes and Stanley Cup competitions.
In the end, there were only 350.000 purchases for the HBO PPV event, which brings up the question: can Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez or Miguel “Junito” Cotto carry a pay-per-view event?
Fact of the matter is that Martinez had to fight in Argentina to generate some money and his last profitable pay-per-view event in America was mostly successful because of his Mexican American opponent: Caesar Chavez Jr.
As for Cotto, his biggest pay-per-view numbers came at the hand of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr; enough said.
The Cotto vs. Martinez fight was not what boxing fans expected from Martinez, which I believe made Cotto look even better than he actually is. (more…)
