  • Will Miguel Cotto Return Against Cornelius Bundrage September 28?

Rumors have been rife that former light middleweight world champs Miguel Cotto and Cornelius Bundrage will look to comeback from respective losses with a bout between the two on September 28 at Barclays Center in the traditional Cotto stronghold of New York, NY.

If the contest comes off, will it be competitive bout that gives opportunity for both to show they can still compete at top level or a one-side drubbing that serves as the send off to certified gatekeeper status for the loser?

Cotto, 37-4 (30), will be hoping to bounce back from two consecutive WBA title bout disappointments, first losing the crown to Floyd Mayweather in 2012 before attempting to regain the belt against Austin Trout this past December.

Bundrage, 32-5 (19), was shockingly upset by career underachiever Ishe Smith in February and at 40 years of age could be engaging in his final spot in the limelight should he lose in non-competitive fashion.

At age 32, Cotto, could be slowing down after 21 world title bouts at light welter, welter and light middle, particularly after absorbing punishing losses to Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito and most recently, Trout.

The Puerto Rican icon would also be at the same disadvantage against Bundrage as he experienced against Trout; being the smaller man facing a career light middle. (more…)

  • Is Vitali Klitschko The Death Of The Heavyweight Division?

He is the reigning WBC heavyweight champion, he has the highest knockout percentage in heavyweight boxing history and he has a huge fight lined up on September 10 against Tomasz Adamek; but does anyone really care about Vitali Klitschko?

The heavyweight division has been losing its staple as the most exciting and dangerous brand of boxing. Not since the days that Mike Tyson was storming through the division have boxing fans and television networks cared enough to showcase the heavyweight product.

Not HBO nor Showtime has paid much attention to Vitali Klitschko or his brother Wladimir Klitschko. The perception seems to be that contemporary heavyweight fighters have no personalities and are not as skilled as heavyweight fighters of a few years ago; the likes of George Foreman, Mike Tyson and even Lennox Lewis.

In fact, Vitali Klitschko’s last defeat in the ring came at the hands of Lennox Lewis in 2003.

While the heavyweight division seems to have stumbled out of favor with boxing fans, the welter and light middle divisions are striving and taking over as boxing’s premier product.

Among them, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Sergio Martinez, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto to name a few; are the central figures in boxing that fans relate to and the names that sell pay-per-view events. (more…)

  • Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito 2 – Advantage Cotto

There have been reasons to discredit Miguel Angel Cotto in the past few years, especially after his first encounter with Antonio Margarito.

However, the fighter from Puerto Rico is looking for a chance at redemption and revenge against Margarito on December 3rd, 2011. There are many factors that will come into play but in the end, Cotto should be the clear favourite going into this fight.

First of all, Top Rank president Todd duBoef has announced that the much anticipated rematch will happen in New York’s Madison Square Garden. On every occasion that Cotto has fought in New York, he has been successful.

His fights at Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium have meant huge ticket sales for the 30 year old. His huge fan base will no doubt overwhelm the arena and make life very difficult for Margarito.

The second factor to consider is that under his new trainer, Emanuel Steward, Cotto has improved significantly since the brutal beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. The Puerto-Rican fighter has faster footwork, movement and his defence is much improved. (more…)

  • Bucket List for any Boxing Fan – Hall of Fame Induction Weekend

Click the above Image for more Photos from this Event

By now everyone has read and heard about Mike Tyson getting choked up or Sylvester Stallone declaring “Yo, Adrian! I did it!” as they gave their induction speeches this past weekend at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. It was a spectacular event and for many the highlight of the weekend, but for some of us that didn’t have the opportunity to stay for the ceremony the rest of the weekend was just as exciting.

I have been to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the past but never for their induction weekend which typically falls on the same weekend as the Puerto Rican Day parade in New York City. In past years I always seemed to be booked covering a Miguel Cotto fight at Madison Square Garden on the eve of the parade.

This year provided the perfect opportunity to attend. A high profile list of inductees that included Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Kostya Tszyu, Nacho Beristain, Joe Cortez, Sylvester Stallone and no major boxing events to cover paved the way for my first induction weekend.

The weekend begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Thursday through Saturday include a variety of events such as ringside lectures, celebrity workouts, fist casting ceremony, 5K run, golf outing, boxing autograph card show, dinners and other special events all of which are complete with several opportunities to meet current and retired boxers. The weekend ends on Sunday, beginning with a parade which includes all the attending boxing celebrities and finishes with the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

My plan was to arrive Thursday evening and attend events all day on Friday and Saturday. I went into the weekend knowing I would be missing the highlight of the weekend by not being able to stay through Sunday. Although I was a bit disappointed to not have that opportunity, my feelings were quickly dismissed after experiencing all the events on Friday and Saturday. (more…)

  • Boxing Preview Analysis: Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley

Ok, so its not Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, but we’ve got a decent enough substitute when Manny Pacquiao defends his WBO welterweight championship against American veteran ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley in Las Vegas this weekend.

For Pacquiao, this is his second defence of the crown he won by stopping Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto back in November, 2009. A multiweight world champion, Pacquiao has fought and more often than not defeated the very best of his era over a career spanning sixteen years.

In Mosley, he meets a man who himself has had a glittering career, a three weight world champion over 18 years and 54 fights. You could argue that neither Pacquiao or Mosley has ducked an opponent.

Its very easy to write Shane off in this one. However, if you look closely at his career losses one thing can be established. He struggles against the bigger and taller opponents. Fights against the late Vernon Forrest and Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright would prove this.

In Pacman, Mosley meets a man shorter than himself and one could argue that Shane can at least match Pacquiao for speed. Certainly against fellow speedsters such as Oscar De la Hoya, Mosley has been successful. Mosley last year even had major success against Floyd Mayweather before losing on points.

With all that being said, Manny is a different kettle of fish. At welterweight, Pacquiao has frightening speed and power. Once he’s worked out an opponent’s style, the fight is usually his. He also seems to be getting better and better each fight whereas the close to 40 year old Mosley has not won a contest since January, 2009.

I can see Mosley starting well in this one. Pacquiao will certainly have to be wary of Mosley’s leaping left hand. However, I can gradually see the older man being worn down by the short compact punches of Pacquiao en route to Mosley’s first career stoppage loss in about 10 rounds.

  • Boxing Result: Marcos Maidana Defeats Erik Morales In A War

Mexican legend Erik Morales very nearly pulled off a major upset last night at Las Vegas’ famed MGM Grand but the former three weight world champion lost a majority decision to Marcos Rene Maidana for the Interim WBA light welter title.

Career light welter Maidana went to work right away on his rival, an ex-super bantam, feather and super feather titlist and Morales was soon put in a bad situation as his right eye was grotesquely swollen shut.

The far greater big fight experience of Morales was instrumental in “El Terrible” wising choosing to let Maidana wear himself down in the first half of the bout, erupting occasionally out of a defensive posture to let rip on some vintage straight right hands that still carried a lot of power.
