A Legacy of Grit, Glory, and Transformation in Women’s Boxing – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association (WBA) is mourning the loss of one of Latin America’s most iconic fighters. Alejandra “La Locomotora” Oliveras, a former world champion and a trailblazer in women’s boxing, passed away on July 28, 2025, in Santa Fe, Argentina, at the age of 47. She had been in a coma for two weeks following an ischemic stroke that led to a massive pulmonary embolism.

Oliveras wasn’t just a champion in the ring—she was a transformative figure. A woman who turned pain into strength and adversity into purpose. Born in El Carmen, Jujuy, in 1978, she grew up in extreme poverty and faced violence from a young age. Her entry into boxing was initially a means of self-defense, but it quickly became a path toward identity, empowerment, and greatness.

She made her professional debut in 2005 and soon made history as the first Argentine woman to win a world title abroad, knocking out Jackie Nava in Mexico in 2006. Over the course of her remarkable career, she captured six world titles across five weight divisions—super bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, super lightweight, and super featherweight. The feat earned her two Guinness World Records and an induction into the Latin American Boxing Hall of Fame in 2024.

Known for her ferocious style, physical power, and unapologetic persona, Oliveras became a prominent figure both in sports and in the media. She engaged in memorable rivalries with legends like Marcela “La Tigresa” Acuña and Lely Luz Flórez, delivering electrifying performances in venues like the iconic Luna Park in Buenos Aires. In 2019, after defeating Lesly Morales, she announced her retirement with a final record of 33 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws. From that point on, she dedicated herself to social and political work.

She founded “Team Locomotora,” a gym in Santa Fe offering free boxing classes to at-risk youth. She also ran for national congress and became a vocal advocate for using sports as a tool for inclusion. Oliveras raised her voice against gender violence, discrimination, and inequality in sports, becoming both a community leader and a coach.

The WBA, which recognized her as world champion on multiple occasions, has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of a woman who transcended the ring.

Women’s boxing has lost one of its pioneers, but her legacy remains indelible. Alejandra “La Locomotora” Oliveras didn’t just open doors—she paved the way with courage, authenticity, and a deep love for the sport. Her story will continue to inspire generations of women who see in boxing not just a discipline, but a means to transform their lives.

  • Taylor and Serrano was the women’s fight of the year  – World Boxing Association

Taylor and Serrano was the women’s fight of the year  – World Boxing Association

One of the most anticipated rematches in women boxing was that of World Boxing Association multi-champions Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, who once again stole the show in the second fight on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Impressive records, extensive sporting careers, discipline, commitment, passion and dedication to boxing with a devotion that impresses everyone every time they enter the ring and the first bell rings. Two women who have gone down in history inspiring millions of girls around the world.

Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor not only became the highest-paid women’s boxers in the world, they also went beyond the ring and left an indelible mark on the fans, demonstrating time and again the great show they are capable of putting on with their technique, intelligence and aggression.

In this second edition of the Taylor-Serrano clash, the tension was equal to or even greater than in their first encounter at Madison Square Garden in New York in April 2022. The Irish fighter sought to execute her tactical plan of maintaining distance with her footwork and high punch volume, which she also brought into the fire zone when the Puerto Rican took control with her relentless forward pressure, narrowing the ring for her opponent. Both were very fast, but Serrano held the power, while Taylor dominated in punch volume.

Another fight, with a competitive rivalry, and of respect, that will accompany the collective memory forever.

  • Women’s boxing continues its growth – World Boxing Association

Women’s boxing continues its growth – World Boxing Association

Since the beginning of women’s boxing until now, it has been a difficult road for female fighters. A road that they have traveled despite the difficulties and in which they have achieved results based on their effort and work.

On International Women’s Day, we must emphasize the integrity of the protagonists of this sport, who demonstrate every day what they are capable of and break barriers at every moment to win important places in the sport.

They have managed to star in major events and the most obvious example was the confrontation between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in April 2022. On that occasion they headlined at the fight at Madison Square Garden, New York, and not only did they make a great fight, but it was the best of the year in the annual awards of the World Boxing Association (WBA) over any male fight.

Now it is becoming more and more common to see them in big events and the public has begun to appreciate the work they do much more. Something that they have earned thanks to their performances.

Women’s boxing pits the best against the best and that is a big key to why they have grown so much. Seeing competitive fights between champions generates a great show and is the reason why there are currently up to seven undisputed champions.

Amanda Serrano, at featherweight; Alycia Baumgardner, at super featherweight; Katie Taylor, at lightweight; Chantelle Cameron, at super lightweight; Jessica McCaskill, at welterweight; Claressa Shields, at middleweight; and Crews Franchón-Dezurn, at super middleweight, are the members of such a special group of owners of the four most important belts in the world.

The WBA is very happy for what they have achieved and for the projection, not only of the champions, but of all the fighters who make this sport something special and unique.

  • Women’s Boxing Takes Over MSG – World Boxing Association

Women’s Boxing Takes Over MSG – World Boxing Association

New York’s Madison Square Garden is set to host the big featherweight championship bout between World Boxing Association (WBA) champion Erika Cruz and the WBC, IBF and WBO champion, Amanda Serrano.

It will be a historic day for women’s boxing as it is the second time that a female fight will be the main event at this venue and it promises to be a fight full of action and excitement.

Besides, the fight will be another clash between Mexico and Puerto Rico, a rivalry that is already a classic in boxing and that has left memorable confrontations for all the fans.

But the victory of women’s boxing is not only there, but the card will be made up of other bouts that promise much and generate many expectations. One of them will be the super featherweight world championship between Alycia Baumgardner and Elhem Mekhaled, who will fight for the vacant WBA belt and the WBC, WBO and IBF belts.

Elin Cederroos, former world champion, will inherit the ring for a really tough and even fight against the undefeated Shadasia Green, in which the WBA Continental Americas super middleweight title will be at stake.

Other prospects in the category such as Skye Nicolson, WBA revelation fighter in 2022.  Ramla Ali, will also fight in the event and will have the opportunity to show themselves in the biggest market in the world.

Women’s boxing has undoubtedly been able to take advantage of every space it has earned through hard work and this weekend will be another of those occasions. The boxing world will be able to enjoy, once again, the great spectacle that continues to grow with the passing of time.

  • 2022, a landmark year for women’s boxing  – World Boxing Association

The growth of women’s boxing has been consistent and the World Boxing Association has long been committed to supporting the courageous women who seek glory in the ring. 2022 left us with great satisfaction with accomplishments to be remembered.

It began in January with a new record for Claressa Shields that led her to enter the Guinness World Records. T-Rex was one of the main protagonists who also closed the year as undisputed 160-pound champion after a unanimous decision over her top opponent Savannah Marshall. That was the main event of a great women-only card at the O2 Arena in the United Kingdom. That was Shields’ second fight when in May she knocked out Ema Kozin as a stepping stone to her main event goal that finally came on October 15.

On the same event, the stars Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner fought in the super featherweight division. “La Bomba” Baumgardner ended up winning to become the new complete queen of the division with all the belts except for the WBA that she wants to conquer this 2023 against the enduring Hyun mi Choi. This fight was ordered by the pioneer organization in November.

On the other hand, we had the most important event that took place at the end of April at Madison Square Garden in New York, where the Irish Katie Taylor once again left a mark of her greatness after triumphing in a dramatic and spectacular way against another outstanding exponent such as the Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano. There, the Irish Katie Taylor once again made her greatness clear after defeating another outstanding exponent, the Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano. This was the first time that two women took center stage, as the main event fight, at the Madison.

The other great star of the moment, Seniesa Estrada, had only one fight during 2022, and once again retained her crown against an opponent of great courage that put her in trouble; the Argentinean boxer Jazmin Villarino, who showed her best version despite not being able to win the belt. Seniesa will seek to be the undisputed minimum weight and is on the way.

And this is just a portion of all that we have experienced from the hand of great women who wear the gloves with value. No doubt this new year will bring more high-impact women’s action.
