But the 147 lb limit is the MAX limit not the limit they have to fight at. A fighter can weigh in anywhere between 141 and 147 and its a legit weltweight fight under the rules.
A fighter is free to weighh within those limits but not under 140 and not over 147.
As I said in a previous post when the Cotto Manny fight was announced any agreement between Manny and Floyd about catchweight is seperate from the sanctioning body.
If Floyd agrees to come in at 145 and actually weighs 147 it won't mean the fight gets stopped, he won't have broken any sanctioning body rules and he is free to fight at 147.
However, he will have violated a private contract signed between himself and Manny and under those terms would be bound to meet any penalties owing for infracting that stipulation, most likely a fine or cut of profits.
It was the same with his fight with Marquez. He agreed 145 lbs, he didn't even try and make that weight and instead came in at 147 anyway. The sanctioning body don't care at all as he made weight according to their rules but he had to pay Marquez a couple million dollars for violating their private agreement.
Personally I'm all in favour of fighters having the power to negotiate their own contracts and wieght arrangements. Anything that helps faciliate the process of the big fights being made should be applauded.
It's not the weight classes that make boxing, its the fighters.
Not sure why you replied to my post with that. I think you meant to reply to someone else maybe? Try reading my other posts on here.
Killer you should know by now I don't read other people's replies.
As soon as I've posted I'm off writing my follow up :p
Re: How is it possible to win a 147 title belt below the welterweight limit?
Are people still complaining that Pac won the belt unfairly because he didn't fight at exactly 147?
Not sure what isn't sinking in? He could have been 141 and would have still been a worthy champion.
Cotto agreed to the catch weight as part of the deal to do the fight. He didn't have to agree to it.
I don't see the problem with catch weights, as long as it's within reason of the weight class. A 142 catch weight would have been a bit harsh and unfair.
Cotto didn't seem to struggle to make 145 and I think any idiot will know those 2lbs didn't make any difference. I think it was almost pointless putting the condition in!

We'll never know if the 2lbs would've make a difference and it's impossible for anyone to say otherwise. What deal was made with Cotto is done. I'm talking about Mayweather. He shouldn't have to fight at a catch weight just to appease 'the great manny pacquiao'. Pac has been given enough concessions. Lets see the fight at 147 (where welterweight title bouts are usually held) and let the winner take all.

First of all catchweights suck but to be able to win titles at heavier weights without fighting at them is B/S... This opens up all possibilities...
It's not called 147 belt. It's called a welterweight title. Welterweight is anywhere from 141-147. The fight was negotiated at 145, so it's a welterweight fight. If you go over 147, it's called over weight!!! Got it kid????
lol stfu you pac nut hugger... 147 is the minimum WELTER WEIGHT LIMIT not the LIGHT welter or SUPER lightweight..
if that is the case let's eliminate LIGHT and SUPER and just have a 10 pound divison class.... got it kid?
WTF! lol 147 is the minimum at welterweight? Kid get we don't need you here.
Welterweight is between 140.1 to 147 pounds. The Maximum is 147 not minimum. ;D

...Although title fights are usually fought spanning the whole of the weight class (ie. 147 being the maximum).

Yeah that was brought up already i meant Maximum, and i rephrase the whole question so read everything before you post... the thing is simple.. Championship fights should not have a catch weight a fighter should be allowed to come at the maximum weight of his belt division which was 147 not 145! ps: I been here since 04/05 around there i aint leaving just yet...:lickish:

But Cotto agreed to it. As champion he could have declined that catch weight if he really wanted, he prob wasn't bothered by it and thought it was an easy way to make an extra couple £m.

Like i said this is not an anti-pac thing. Cotto agreed to it and in my opinion Pac would have won at 147. It's just that wbo/wba/wbc bodies that allow catchweight title fights. I simply feel the rule should be change when it comes to a title fight. If you cant take the extra 2 pounds risk that come with the belt then you should not earn it.. catch weights dont bother me, titles being won at them do.. no matter who agrees to what..

First of all, you are a hater so this thread basically is an anti-pac thread.
Second, there's no provision that you can't win a title when you fight below 147. Besides, 145 was the weight they have agreed upon during weigh-in; definitely not the weight when they fought. Both of them were over 147 when they fought so how could this be not a 147 fight? You will see the logic if you'll remove your hate on Pac.

First point Bollox to the highlighted section.
Here's a link re the weight classes, no one is arguing really that Pac is WW champion, what the point is, is that he is dictating what weight his opponent comes in at , that's not how it works. The sanctioning bodies recognise the classes and should stop supporting catch weights.

Really? During the weigh in they said "Hey how about 145 Cotto?"

You refer to the thread being an anti pac thread then you refer me to one person in the thread , i don't hate Pac, so should i leave the thread as i may have changes it from anti pac. And your little symbol is very big of you thanks for that :-X very adult of you.
My Bollox comment was in response to you saying a broad comment about the thread. my addition of a link was to help people not sute where the weight limits lie.
Re: How is it possible to win a 147 title belt below the welterweight limit?
I don't understand how "so-called" boxing cant understand weight limits.
There limits!!! They are maximum weights. A fighter weighting 95lbs can theoretically fight another fighter weighing 95lbs for EVERY single weight devision title.
YOu only have to be less then the maiximum weight per division to fight for the title.
