I will point out that I would never be racist myself as I think it is small minded and wrong, but you cannot restrict discourse. I really believe that anything goes and verbal stupidity is enough of a noose. You allow people to say stupid things and then call them stupid. That in itself is enough. I believe in freedom of speech to its ultimate extremes and it is up to individuals to handle that as they see fit. Thus a racist can say what he likes, but he shouldn't expect to have many friends beyond other like minded racists.
I agree totally, people have the right to be racist. I don't like the thought police.
However we don't have total freedom of speech anyway. How do you feel about incitement to violence, which is illegal in the Uk and most other places probably? Should people be limited from freely saying we should kill jews, muslims, pick a group you think deserves it etc. Even by not directly saying to go out and beat up someone, you might still fan the flames.
Im not having a go by the way, just interested.
Yes, and I think you make valid points.
But when a radical cleric is saying 'Let's burn the Jews' don't most people just regard him as a lunatic and walk away? On the whole common sense prevails and people say that there is a psycho on the street corner.
I think the rhetoric is enough to hang people on their own. That is the most extreme example though. All Floyd is doing here is advocating supporting black athletes. He isn't advocating murder or anything of that ilk.
It is just a bias in favour of a particular race and you get it all the time. And I regard nationality as being a similar thing. A Brit will support a British fighter. That is biased. How dare those Russians support Lebedev against the great James Toney?
I'm not saying it is right as I don't do it. I often go against the Brit and support the black, but I cannot tell all people to conform to how I think. They can have their views and I can mock them for it. That typically is enough.

Fair enough, as a libertarian ultimately I think i'd have to agree with you. Discourse will prevail. Ironically, Mayweather just be hatin' on a mother**cker.
Re: Floyd Mayweather in another racial controversy
Any "controversial" and/or "racial" thing Mayweather says is likely to please his fans and put butts in the seats at his fights. So I guess he's not as stupid as he looks. :-X
BTW, I'm a Pacquiao fan, and Floyd is a piece of shit, but I gotta admit the rice & dog/cat comment is pretty hilarious.

Totally, and that is what wins. The language involved. Floyd acts like a dick and people think he is a dick and that is fair enough. He could evolve the situation and say sorry, but if not then he is a racist and that is enough.
Nobody is being forced to pay for his PPV or anything like that. If you care then you make him pay.
Re: Floyd Mayweather in another racial controversy
Miles. Just curious. You're an Englsh teacher in Korea right?
How would your students feel if your express your opinion sorrounding these Mayweather racial thing?
Do you think they will still respect you if you use the same remarks at them like Mayweather used?

I don't use that language though. In the lecture hall I am being paid to be professional and that means doing a job.
I don't do social networking for good reason. You are held to ransom for every comment you make.
Mayweather is too public and that is the only reason people have issues with him.
I like my students and know some of them are racist. Their media is racist how could they not be racist? I gave my Man U example.
I don't mind that as people all support a team for their own particular bias.
Re: Floyd Mayweather in another racial controversy
I think we're all going around in circles here. Floyd is obviously racist, and he's also prone to stupid comments. That's all there is to it. Doesn't make him a worse fighter, obviously. One thing has nothing to do with the other. The guy's good... period. But he's a stupid racist. What's so hard to accept about that? Nobody's perfect. We all have our faults. Some are just bigger than others. Floyd's faults are pretty huge. Then again he hasn't had the best role models. Still... he needs to take some responsibility for his own stupid comments. Bottom line... I'm not losing any sleep over it. He's the way he is, and that's that. Next subject.
Re: Floyd Mayweather in another racial controversy
Any consulation I think it does have to do with his race. For the last 3 days on ESPN all I been hearing is about Jeremy Lin and they keep pushing the point that he's the first Asian American in the NBA and how much he means to the asian american community and they were talking to them all day about it.
I think no matter what his race is he is the "story" right now and they are going to push and protect him. Because they talk about his greatness and even comparing him to greats like Clyde Frazier and ignoring the fact he averages around 8 turnovers a game.
He's just their hype job right now, he'll go back to being a normal player after another month or so, or when his team faces a team that has a point guard that knows what defense is.

This is way worse than what Floyd said. You think Jeremy Lin got into Harvard because he's a great student? The guy graduated with a 3.1 GPA. I went to an Ivy League undergrad. You have to try to fail to get a 3.1 GPA. Or you have to be way less qualified than everyone else there. But sure, use this as a jumping point to trash black people.
Those of you claiming that his hype has "nothing" to do with the fact that he's Asian are full of it. I'm not saying it's the only reason -- of course not. But to deny that it's part of the story is absurd.
So name all the black players who have done what Lin has. Go!

I feel the same way with Cam Newton. Now that is a bigger hype job, since football is the no. 1 sport in America. It's been said he's better than Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. But his 2nd year in the NFL should bring him back to reality. Running QBs tend to be mediocre.

And have short careers.
Back to Floyd, over 1,000 views in 3 days on here! He's definitely got his marketing down.

ESPN is bullshit...I am so tired of them being the one and only sports news outlet. Sportscenter is ok, but all the bullshit opinion forums really shows you that #1 Loads of their "talent" just follows a script and #2 loads of their "talent" just plays Devil's Advocate in fake arguments. ESPN really irritates me, I can't stand to watch it anymore. I'll watching the actual games they have, but the opinion shows??? NEVER!
Jeremy Lin is unique in that he's an Asian-American (another thing the liberal media loves, a hyphenated American :vd: ) that's good at basketball, but the main thing that stands out to me is that he's a Harvard graduate which is very rare in the pro sports world.
Something else I have heard recently is that they are talking about Lin's religion and comparing him with Tebow. Why does it matter? Why bring up a person's religion? It's an erroneous subject in the world of sports and how good or not good someone is. There have been great Christians, Jews, and Muslims in all sports, just like there have been people with low moral standings in all of sports...it doesn't fucking matter!!! Leave an athlete's choice of religion to the athlete!!!

Hard to do when you have these righteous jackasses spouting off and proselytizing instead of answering the first post-game/post-fight question that's asked every time. "Well, first I want to thank my lord and savior, Jesus Christ, for being there for me and making this possible, blah, blah, blah." (And obviously with Tebow, it was even less a matter of the media making it an issue -- the dude won't shut the fuck up about it.)
This is the biggest reason I can't be a huge fan of Andre Ward too.
I would love it if these guys would keep it to themselves and we didn't have to hear about it.

Well this is off topic, but unlike most "RUNNING" QB'S Cam Newton can actually throw the ball. He's not like Michael Vick in that he's a THROW FIRST QB, sure he's a tremendous athlete, but he's a solid QB with good fundamentals.....That said, Randall Cunningham had a very long career and Cam can throw better than Randall could, and he's bigger.
shza, people talk about all sorts of shit I don't want to hear about....I am no evangelical, but if that makes those people happy let them do it, who is the media to censor or mock them? Maybe the reporters should go on about their beliefs and then have someone mock their value system. Hell this issue has been around forever, baseball player Christy Matthewson (aka 'The Christian Gentleman') didn't even talk to reporters he heard were cheating on their wives.....I wish THAT would come back. Reporters aren't hardly people anyway....the muckraking sonsabitches!!!!

I was responding to your suggestion that it was the media that was somehow making up the religious issue, as if it's not Jeremy Lin instigating it by being an evangelical loudmouth.
