Why all the love for Junior Witter?

I can understand maybe some American's who've only seen him beat Vivian Harris. But what about the Brits who saw him fight Judah, N'Dou, Kotelnik, Lynes etc..?

Does one impressive KO over a complete donkey wipeout half a dozen stink fests?

Does being over-confident and unorthodox make you a great fighter?

Does switch-hitting and having a cool hair cut make you great?

So many questions....

Is Britain that desperate for a new boxing hero now Hatton has lost?

Is Hatton on the downward slope that most British sports stars go down after being built up?

Is Witter on his way up that slope? If he is, why?

Why is Hatton being called a coward when he has twice (very recently) conceded weight to fight in his opponents home country and city?

Why is he being lambasted for fighting Juan Lazcano, when he has just come off a KO loss?

Why is he being lambasted for wanting to get back in the ring with the same fighter who brutally ko'd him? Anybody who answers "for the money" is completely over-looking the fact that Hatton genuinley wants another shot.

Why does one win over Vivian Harris wipeout the displays against Judah, Lynes, Kotelnik and N'dou?

and most importantly

Why hasn't Witter made an offer? Wonder if it's because he can continue to generate publicity from fighting mediocre opponents and slagging Hatton off?

Just a final note to say that i can not believe the naivety of some people on here. This fight will happen, regardless of wether you agree Junior deserves it. Hatton and Witter are playing Cat and Mouse....building the fight up. Witter is fighting on ITV, Witter is gaining lots of popularity with the fans who are sick of the sight of Hatton, Witter is fighting a fighter who has hardly any chance of beating him.....so's Hatton. The same thing will happen around November time. This fight will happen in 2009. You'll see.

I honestly don't think there's anything special about this fella.To me he is probably the most overrated/overhyped fighter in the ring today.He will fight someone big then get knocked out.

I dont love Witter. He is alright as a boxer but just that. He hasnt beaten the quality that Hatton has beaten, not by a long shot. Of course, he can call out Hatton. That gets the attention of only those are blind to the fact that Hatton has just fought the best and that Witter is still far away from deserving the only big cheque of his career.

The point you're referring to was me making a point about how our press/media build fighters up. I was wondering if the same thing is likely to happen to Witter.

Nobody is in love with him, but I will say I once walked into a room with him there. He has this incredibly bright aura around him. It was like he was in God Mode in Quake 2.

We all sat around, smoked some weed, and talked openly about the Mayweather vs Big Show rematch slated for June 2009

The American fans along with all other boxing fans (excluding blinkered Hatton lovers, of course) WANT the fight because Hatton and Witter are rated no.1 and 2 at 140. Naturally ALL boxing fans should want the best per divison to face eachother. So why would it be surprising so many prefer to see this match-up than Hatton fighting an exhibition match?

The Brit fans that KNOW the history between these two are sick and frustrated with Hatton's million and 1 excuses to dodge Witter. Simple as.

I dont love Witter, I am a big Hatton fan but I have gained a lot of respect for Witter over the last few years,

he missed his chance to fight hatton a few years ago because the fight didn't make sense but now he is a world champion

And I think we would all agree I would rather see Hatton Vs Witter at the City of Manchester than Hatton Vs Lacuzwho

Planning a fight for next year is dangerous witters getting old Hatton already has to put up with people saying he only beats washed up fighters why give him the excuse

I dont buy the fact Hatton needs a warm up fight after coming off a defeat to Mayweather he is too strong mentally to let it affect him against Witter I think this is the money men getting nervous

Hatton is a fans favourite and a exciting boxer, no one draws a crown like him so to compare any boxer to him on this scale is un fair and unnecessary Hatton can fill a stadium and PPv fighting anyone as he has just shown which means financially it doesn't matter who he fights

Seems strange that he's been happy to slag him off for 6 years, but he hasn't made one offer to fight him other than sayin "i'd fight him for free, 'i'd fight him for bus fare" etc... but without really following it through with anything concrete.

I am suggesting that Witter has made a good living from fighting mediocre opponents whilst earning his reputation from stalking Hatton. It's his mouth outside the ring rather than his performances inside it that has captured the publics attention.

Paulie has one of the best jaw's in the game and his movement is enough to give anyone fit's....He wouldn't stand still long enough for either to get in any volume of shot's off at one time...Hatton's hit and hold would not be that effective due to the fact Paulie would be hard to tie up...Witter would not out box him or take him out with power....

Im basing it on who I thinks better . I suppose you can debate whos better based on achievements. Hattons had better wins and has done more but IMO Witter would win if they met so I rate him higher . Better speed , power , skills etc . Witter wouldnt have got knocked out vs Floyd and I think Witter overall is a better boxer than Ricky .

I wouldn't say I am in love with Witter. He is not even in my top ten of favorite fighters out there today. I just feel that based on what he has accomplished at 140 that he is deserving of a shot at Hattton more than anyone in the weight class. You may say he is not in Hatton's class or that Ricky will KO him, but it deserves to be proven in the ring.

I still stand by what I said...Malignaggi is the dark horse of the champions./..Don't let his last fight be the way to judge him

I dont like Witter but he does deserve his chance.

Ricky wont fight him because he said something nasty at sports personality of the year, wont fight him because he desnt want to give him a payday, hasnt done enough, isnt a big enough name........Its all getting very boring.

Ricky is affraid of losing to Witter, I dont doubt that for one minute. For those that say he cant be affraid, he just fought the best in the business above his prefered weight class, bollocks. That was a pretty much risk free assignment (always a risk climbing through the ropes, Im aware of that)

I don't know exactly what you mean - "offers"?

I don't know what Mick Hennessy and Team Hatton have discussed behind closed doors. Do you? From what Hatton says he wont even entertain the idea of facing Witter. Hatton is the one with the plethora of excuses for NOT making the fight. If Hatton WANTED the fight it would happen. Surely you agree with that?

But go on Hennessy's site, you'll see a billion of those press release thingys from over the years.

I don't understand how ANYONE can have a problem with the way Witter has chased this fight.

Hatton was regarded the best in Britain. Witter was no.2, so wanted to fight Hatton to prove he was the better fighter.

Hatton is now regarded the best in the world. Witter is no.2, so wants to fight Hatton to prove he's the best.

Right I've steered clear of this because I'm getting really bored of it but I'll throw my two cents in to hopefully clarify some points.

Whats annoying here is that some of you don't acknowledge that the other has a valid point.

1. Hatton has done much more in his career than Junior and Junior has pissed alot of it away chasing a fight that hasn't happened. What has probably pissed him off even more is that until now, nobody has listened to his bitching and whining and its pretty pathetic sometimes. I also find it interesting that some of Hennessy's fighters claim to be avoided even though they don't always do their best to make the fight. (I've read some interesting things in Boxing News about Thaxton-Khan lately). Witter needs to wake up and accept the fact that he's not doing anything to sell himself. Why not go and force a fight with someone Hatton has beaten? He could have sorted out a deal with Paulie while Hatton was still dealing with the loss. He's an idiot and has made himself look like a mug.

2. I'm a big Ricky Hatton fan and I cannot fucking stand Witter. However while it's all well and good to say that you think Paulie is a better fighter, fact is fact and Witter has done more to prove himself at 140 than Paulie, and so has Torres for that matter. If Hatton wants to keep his crown as the #1 at 140, he's going to have to accomadate the #1 challenger to his crown. Hatton cannot make these excuses forever. I completely understand him taking the Lazcano fight, but really Witter should be on the undercard with a view to a megafight later in the year, not Paulie. And saying he's not deserving enough doesn't really cut it in my book anymore.

That video Bilbo showed really riled me. If someone goaded me like that, I'd tell my promoter to make the fight happen immediately. I don't understand why there is such a fuss about it as I can't see how Junior can beat Ricky. Hatton is a better fighter.

Am saying if he really wanted the fight that badly, surely he would have made an offer to fight him?

Seems strange that he's been happy to slag him off for 6 years, but he hasn't made one offer to fight him other than sayin "i'd fight him for free, 'i'd fight him for bus fare" etc... but without really following it through with anything concrete.

I am suggesting that Witter has made a good living from fighting mediocre opponents whilst earning his reputation from stalking Hatton. It's his mouth outside the ring rather than his performances inside it that has captured the publics attention.

I don't know what Mick Hennessy and Team Hatton have discussed behind closed doors. Do you? From what Hatton says he wont even entertain the idea of facing Witter. Hatton is the one with the plethora of excuses for NOT making the fight. If Hatton WANTED the fight it would happen. Surely you agree with that?

But go on Hennessy's site, you'll see a billion of those press release thingys from over the years.

I don't understand how ANYONE can have a problem with the way Witter has chased this fight.

Hatton was regarded the best in Britain. Witter was no.2, so wanted to fight Hatton to prove he was the better fighter.

Hatton is now regarded the best in the world. Witter is no.2, so wants to fight Hatton to prove he's the best.

What is his crime?

When i say offer i'm referring to the fact that Hennesy hasn't once made a formal offer for the fight to happen.

They've done plenty of press releases saying they want the fight. Getting Witter's name up there along side Hattons etc... but they haven't done anything about actually getting the fight.

I agree they should fight. It will be a travesty if they don't.

At least when Thaxton wanted to fight Kahn, they made a formal offer. This is what i mean about being serious about the fight. They've had 7 years to make an offer. Thaxton was serious about Kahn and they made an offer within months. They have the same promoter so why the hold up?

Anyways they are doing their job pretty well because Witter's popularity seems to be increasing tenfold and a lot of people (including me) really want to see the fight. Much more than i did a few years ago.

No one loves Junior Witter they just want to see the most intriguing fight at 140 what is wrong with that ?? Witter is number 2 and Hatton is number 1 and Hatton keeps making lame excuses putting the fight off and he has been doing it for years of course boxing fans are going to be frustrated and disappointed.

Make an offer? He offered to fight him at no cost so what's the problem?

No one is saying they're in love with Witter but you are clearly in love with Hatton.

Keep supporting him because with every excuse he makes, he puts you in position to make 10 more.

If Ricky is indeed all about the challange he will fight Witter. Theres no challenge in fighting Mayweather a second time. If Hatton wins hes pulled off a Buster Douglas sized upset, if (when) he loses..........he was out of his natural weight class against the best in the business, no shame in that,blah blah blah, its a no lose situation.

Ricky's latest reason/excuse.... He said he was finnaly thinking about fighting Witter and then something happened at the Sports Personality Awards. He said that a few fighters were lined up and Hatton went along the line shaking hands with them and when he got to Witter apparently Witter said 'Some day...' Hatton now says that that has made him determined not to fight him.

Hatton is really starting to hack me off... he's getting himself a reputation as a bullshitter and people now genuinley think he is ducking Witter. If Hatton is so annoyed at Witter and so confident he can beat him he would fight him... period. There would be none of this crap about not wanting to give Witter a big pay day or Witter not being known well enough accross the Pond.

Put up or shut up Ricky because this crap is losing you respect and fans in equal measures.

Ive pretty much stayed out of this thread because i'm sick of repeating myself but its refreshing to see some of the answers here as i thought it was just me and Fenster who thought this way ;)

You think Ricky is ducking Witter Saddo?

I personally think bigger things have always presented themselves before a Witter fight, especially since Hatton has been stateside for the last couple years.

I would like to see it happen but haven't heard the calling for it be this strong until just recently and now all the sudden Ricky has been ducking him since 2000 ??? It's all a bit much and I wonder what possibly spurred such demand. Witter isn't even good to watch.
