Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
First off, congrats to Margarito wining the fight against Cotto.
I personally, have NEVER seen Cotto look so good in the first half of the fight. He was fighting the PERFECT fight until of course, he realized he couldn't keep the running pace for 12 full rounds against a BRICK'ed Chin Margarito.
Margarito on the other hand fought HORRIBLEY. I have never seen anyone get tagged so CLEANLY with POWER SHOTS time and time again.
99/100 boxers would have been badly hurt if not KO'd by the CLEAN shots Cotto landed on Margarito TIME and TIME again.
The only thing that kep Margarito in the fight was STRICTLY his chin. He threw less then 40 jabs I think throughout the entire fight!!!
I'm not taking anything away from Margarito because this style of 'Hit me on the face PLEASE' works will for him but is most definetely NOT the way ANYONE should learn how to box.

Miguel was taking Tony to school ;D
Tony is Carlos Manuel Baldomir with power and odd angles. With a chin like that and heavy hands to compliment that, who needs skill?
;D

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
Can't really say Cotto was taking Tony to school if his punches were pretty much mosquitoe bites that kept Tony walking forward without even bending the kneww a little. I can imagine Cotto started to shit his pants when he saw that the fists that were made of stone against other guys were fists made of pillows against Tony.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
You're absolutely right. But Margarito does know what works for him and he utilizes his face-first defensive method.

I have to disagree I think Tony knows his strengths and he works hard to build on them people are going on like he is a mindless robot with a stone jaw
he knows he isn't a naturally slick as cotto so he works on his conditioning until it is insane, he didn't hit cotto with his chin he hit cotto with 237 power punches to Cotto's 179 his percentages my not be as good as Cotto but his has the fitness to afford to miss this is what makes Tony a great fighter not for being slick but for being great at what he does, I have as much respect for that as I do Cottos Boxing ability
This fight was not won by one mans chin but but amazing conditioning, unrelenting pressure and will to win

MArgarit was getting hit Flush in every round. IF it wasn't for that chin he would have been out early.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
You go with what works. There is no perfect way in any sport. You learn your own techniques that work for you and then you practice, practice, practice. Margarito found what works and he sticks to it.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
It would be foolish to deny that Tony's chin has helped get him where he is, but it would be just as foolish to say that that's the ONLY thing he's got. If he only had a chin and nothing else, he wouldn't have knocked Cotto out. Or Cintron, or any of his other victims for that matter. If he had no skills whatsoever, he would have merely lasted the full 12 rounds but still lost. Clearly, the fact that he wins most of his fights, many by KO, shows that he has some skill. Of course I would agree that his style is not for everyone, but he does the best he can with what he's got, and he's done quite well if you ask me.

No, more like Tony is a slow mule with a chin. Cotto hits cleaner and harder than Tony. Don't forget, prior to the breathing issues, Cotto too was taking Tony's bombs to the chin with and reacted well. Marg by far has the BETTER CHIN.
Two things we learned.
1)Cotto is not the low blow when in trouble type. I always said this was BS if you watch the Cotto VS Corley and Torres fight.
2) Cotto's chin is sturdy when he is not draining his body. I saw this already in the Judah fight when Cotto acknowledged a nice Judah punch.. Difference between being on shaky legs and simply recognizing you got hit by a nice shot and wanting to protect yourself.
I will say yet again. Tony was a bum in the fight except for his chin and the fact that Cotto ALLOWED him to come forward the whole night. A nice JAB and laterl movement would have nullified that donkey drunken donkey style of Margarito's. I guarantee you.. Cotto will be punching walls for months when he sees how he allowed the fight to go.
How dare you call any boxer a bum i do not think you belong anywhere near a boxing forum with sh+t like that those 2 were warriers in there and if it were not for them we would not be here talking about the greatest sport around today!!!!!!! Your man got beat get over it but stop the trash talk:mad:

Cotto himself has admitted that he hit Judah low, stating that "he will do anything to win a fight" So you are wrong about your boy.

Sure, a slow mule that packs a punch like a mule's kick.

Don't you think it’s the other way around? Tony was not the guy that was saved by his corner and had an unrecognizable bloody face after the stoppage.

It was barely round 2 when Cotto got that uppercut that sent him to sit on the ropes and start breathing from his mouth from round 2 and on. Some punches pay their toll as they accumulate. We've seen Chavez, Mayweather, etc. Do that.
Interesting how people said that Cotto would work on Tony's body and make him quit. It was the other way around and it was seen as early as round 2. As for the breathing issues, guess what caused it.

Cotto recognized Tony's power and solid chin that made him back pedal from one corner to the other and get on a bycicle. I was surprised to see that.

If so then how bad do you think it sounds to know that your fighter got PUNISHED by a bum.

Nope, Tony's chin and punches ALLOWED him to keep coming forward and giving Cotto a beating. Are you saying that Cotto was just being nice and "allowed" Tony to take him like that?
Quote:

If...would...if...would...if...
Imagine if the fight went to the scorecards. We would hear more crying from die-hard Cotto fans about how he got robbed but the fight was STOPPED, Cotto was SAVED by his corner, Cotto's face showed CLEARLY what happened in that fight, etc. COTTO LOST BY TKO! No doubts, no questions, no nonsense.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
It scares me to think of how Margarito will turn out after his career is over. Just because he is not getting concussed does not mean he is not getting some bruising and small short circuits of the brain with his head being bounced all over the place like that.
It will add up on him.

I posted something earlier pertaining to this. I would like to see Tony fight a couple of more times and call it quits. Guys going to be sitting in a rocking chair sipping apple juice through a straw when he's 50. Great chin, no doubt, but brains are complex things and getting jiggled around like pudding isn't a good thing, especially to the extent his does. I'd love to see x-rays of his skull; must be 10 inches thick;D

Look at the beatings george chuvalo took and he came away with all his faculties. It all depends on what genes you have.

Good point. Look at how things ended up for Mike quarry though:-\ And Oscar Diaz is still fighting for his life from that brutal loss a couple of weeks ago. I don't know how Tony can not only take the punishment, but smile at his opponent when he's getting hit for the 1000th time;D

Nothing like revisionist history and living in denial.Yawn Sanchez..."Not even 40 jabs the entire fight by Margarito"....He threw 30 in the 1st round. The way he tucked his arms into his sides negating alot of Cottos body work is also discarded ?Sometimes when you can throw a very high volume of power shots with so many angels .....constantly and big time hurt on people, your not exactly thinking about backing up.Contrary to some,Tony can throw a diverse group of shots, over & under. If It ain't broke, don't try to fix it.Look,Margarito does not pretend to be what he is not.He is not a polished technical boxer,he is not fleet of foot or a ring finesse master & he is not adverse to catching his opponents best shots on the chin and then smiling at them!Nor is he some pretentious loud mouth that leads with his tounge and then follows with his fist's.He is one that maximizes his strengh's and forces some good fighters to realize there own weaknesses. Chins can be over rated.Do not disregard what sits in a mans chest and the steeliness of mind.Oh yeh.....btw He just broke down, battered stopped one of the top skilled and respected fighters in the world today, solidly and without question.

HBO: Boxing: PPV: Cotto vs. Margarito: COMPUBOX POST- FIGHT ANALYSIS
I misread but regardless...340 jabs thrown, 30 landed for a connect percentage of a BRILLIANT 9%. Talk about an outstanding pugilist...YAWN.
My point of this thread was to merely outline that Margarito's style will ONLY work for Margarito which is taking SHOT after SHOT of power punches CLEAN to the head and not budge. He is not a boxer that ANYONE should try emulate.
Did he break down Cotto? Sure he did. Cotto fought the best I've ever seen him fight. He was at the TOP of his game and connecting beautifully. Any other boxer would surely have been rocked at the very least and/or hit the canvas. It was ONLY Margarito's chin that kept him in the fight and allowed him to capitalize. Had Margarito had the chin of a normal human being and used the same strategy during this fight, he would have been KO'd in 6 hands down. NO ONE would argue that.
It may sound like I'm taking the gusto out of Marg's big win. Hardly...I'm just stating the fact that Margarito's boxing style of getting hit CLEAN with POWER SHOTS 4-5 times in a row before landing his own is by far, the DUMBEST strategy known to man but works well for him simply because he has a chin made of an unknown, alien type substance.

Nawlins:...Calm down bud...I never said Margarito has no skill. He obviously knows how to throw a punch but skill wise in terms of actual boxing? He's pretty far down the todem pole in that regard. His defence is his face and it works for him! Hit me 5 times so I can hit you once...Again, that strategy works for him strictly because of his chin. Anyhow, we're beating a dead horse. Congrats to Margarito once again for beating the best Cotto i've ever seen. Let's hope we can see it again sometime next year!

I do believe you are underselling many abit here.....Including your Man,Cotto. To suggest that Tony won souly on his chin is like someone saying Margarito won because Cotto had no punch? Ugh...Last I checked Throwing a proper punch was a component in actual boxing?A chin is more than physical. Not like Tony has never been hurt in a fight ya know ;D I just dont know about a rematch,That will be uphill battle for solid Cotto.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
I'm a huge Cotto fan, but I give Tony more credit than just his chin. His conditioning, heart, power and persistance won him that fight. I am very impressed with Margarito as a fighter. He walked through Cotto. I would love to see a rematch. Don't think Cotto deserves one just yet. I only hope that Cotto can do the same thing (if he gets a rematch) a little better and for all 12 rounds.

Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
Technically Margarito is nothing particularly admirable.
However, as a fighter he hones his physicality to such a high level that he compensdates somewhat for his lack of finnesse.
I believe the thread almost states "No boxer should learn to fight like Antonio." But if more young fighters took the same mental approach to the sport as Antonio did it would be 700% better a spectacle.
Margarito is not to be admired because of his chin. He should be admired for his ability to maintain a huge output throughout a fight, for his willingness to fight every second of every round and his hunger for victory. He may not be flashy, decorated or have fans checking every training video trying to emulate him, but he must be admired for his pure raw unadulterated hunger and work ethic.
-
Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
People are forgetting the good work Tony did in the first half of the fight. He got tagged to get his body shots off and clearly hurt Cotto as early as the 2nd.
Are people really suggesting that Cotto just randomly fell to bits from about 6 or 7? has anyone seen Cotto that tired he was virtually spent by rd 10 that was because of the work done early in the fight.
I never once see this schooling people blabber about i see early that Cotto could not take the pressure and that Marg took his shots a hell of a lot better than Cottos tokk his.
-
Re: Margarito = How NOT to learn how to box
What ever you guys say it will never change the fact that during the first half Cotto was landing his bombs in combos and that Margaros Chin made all the difference. Other boxer could have never stand for such a painfull assault like that.

It's What Makes boxing GREAT. Can get completely different styles and skill level, yet it still isn't an easy trip to the bookies.
If everyone came up like Marg, it would be just a question of the toughest SoB getting to the top like in the days of Sullivan. The constant evolution of the sport to counter what works for some guys is fascinating, yet supposedly lesser skilled fighters can still make up for it with other attributes. Tony's breakdown of Cottto will remain a favourite of main for ever.
