Margocheato, not Margarito. While the Internet forums are rife with speculation and innuendo about the Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley “loaded gloves” controversy, interest in cheating in boxing is high.

Which explains why HBO has bought the rights to producer Eric Drath’s documentary “Cornered,” which replays and reexamined the 1983 Madison Square Garden fight between Billy Collins Jr. and Luis Resto.

Trainer Carlos “Panama” Lewis removed all the padding from Resto’s gloves, turning his boxer’s fists into brass knuckle type weapons. Collins was savagely beaten during the fight and, when it was discovered how the Resto camp had cheated, Lewis and Resto were banned from boxing for life. The duo also did short bids in an upstate New York prison the name of which was, appropriately, the Collins Penitentiary.

Veteran trainer Artie Curley was also in Resto’s dressing room and corner. It is my belief that he knew what Lewis did but said nothing before or after the criminal act.

In an interview for Drath’s documentary, Resto admitted that he and Lewis doctored gloves for other bouts.

What’s been lost in the shuffle since 1983 is something I know for a fact. I was at the Garden that night and the two NYSAC officials who were supposed to inspect Resto’s gloves before never did so. One of the two was drunk while “on duty” at the card. Both men are now dead.

The California State Athletic Commission continues to probe the “hardened” wrappings which were removed when Mosley trainer Nazim Richardson blew the whistle to inspectors. Reports have likened the some of the wrapping material as being similar to plaster.

Meanwhile, a veteran Nevada commission official tells Boxingconfidential that California believes it has the goods on being Margarito and chief trainer Javier Capetillo being bad.

“I’ve spoken to some people over there,” the Nevada source said. “They are going to bring the hammer down on these guys. It doesn’t help the Margarito team’s situation that Gov, Schwarznegger was sitting at ringside. At the end of the day, the governor feels that it’s his commission and he wants any wrongdoers held accountable.”

The CSAC will begin a hearing on the matter Feb. 10.

The best outcome I can see for Margarito is if Capetillo tells the commission he was the cheater and that the fighter did not know what was going on.

California is looking, and rightfully so, to suspend and fine someone. If Capetillo plays fall guy, I think Margarito will receive lighter punishment or even possibly escape any interruption of his ring career.

In Margaros case have already a jurisprudence ( Collins fight ) , so i dont believe that Margaro didnt know what his trainer doing to him each time when Capetillo wrapping him , for example if somebody try to put on you in the Gauzes or hands-wrap something like that sustance that you unknown , is logic that you will going ask , What is that and for what?

Just like Tito would do right? and no i don't think Trinidad loaded up his gloves either, but he was accused of the same thing, and then i thought the same thing i think now, that it's just plain out bullshit, and if Capetillo were to do it, well hell you can't automatically say the fighter knew about it, plenty times you see a fighter just relaxing with headphones on while getting wrapped, getting focused for the fight

I am curious Danny G why do you not like Margarito? I can see why alot of people dont like some fighters because of their style or their attitude outside the ring. So I am honestly interested in knowing what you have against Margo?

Dude you can compare Trinidad to Margarito.. Trinidad used tape not bricks/stones. Trinidad was a much better fighter and didnt use plaster...Don't try to justify this losers acts and dont try to find excuses because there aren't any...he cheated, he knew about it, and he only won fights because he cheated..now has been exposed and should pay the consequences and not claim stupidity and act as if we are dumb enough to believe him...at least I am not.

It was rivalry with Cotto but after he beat Cotto, it was all good. I was rooting for Tony before the Mosley fight, but when news came out that he was loading his gloves, it all made perfect sense. He destroyed Cintron and Cotto and yet his punches against Shane were as though Sergio Mora himself was throwing those weak azz pity pat punches. Like Lampley said, where were those tremendous THUDDING punches against Mosley? He cheated, plain and simple. Fight to win and do what you can and must but adding plaster to your wraps is just a little too much for me. I lost respect for the guy.

In closing, when I found out about the plaster, I immediately began to root for Mosley and I enjoyed the fight very much because someone was caught cheating and got exposed right after.

Fighters and whoever is wrapping their hands have to be on the same page. You can't just wrap every fighters hands the same - every fighter's hands are different and because of that plus their style of boxing - handwrapping should be different and catered toward the boxer. This happens with feedback, input and learning as they develop that relationship. It also comes in training camp if that relationship isn't already in place (new trainer). Fight night is NOT the first time a fighter gets his hands wrapped by an individual.Even for my boxers that I've wrapped their hands for years - I get feedback to make sure the job feels good TO THEM. Doesn't really matter what I think. I'm no pro at handwrapping, but I know that pros know exactly how the wrap job should feel for them.

My point is that unless they 'loaded' his gloves regulary and during training camp - I would think Margarito either 1) knew something was different that night about the handwraps and planned to keep quiet or 2) he knew all along they "wrapped" his hands that way

I don't really buy the "he didn't know" excuse. A fighters hands are his career. You just don't go to sleep and wake up with your hands wrapped.

What if Cotto isnt tha same fighter he was prior to Tony and Tony is found guilty of loading his gloves....I think Tony should go to prison.......He essentially robbed Cotto of a Wolrd Championship career....

Dont cry Tony nut huggers...there was no reason for Tony to load his gloves before the Shane fight as compared to his three prior fights.........It is not like he wasnt knocking people out....

Well. He did get beat up for 25 minutes. That's a biblical penance.;)

I personally think Margo knew and that this was either the first time or one of a very few times he's tried this. If we are to believe he packed on the lbs after Cotto maybe he wanted to "counterbalance". Doesn't make it right and if it is proven he knew (don't know how he wouldn't have) he should receive a lengthy suspension. Tyson got a year for biting a piece of Holyfield's ear off, Judah got suspended a year for fighting people not his opponent; Margarito should get at least 2-3 years. He could have permanently injured or killed Mosley.

AM should get longer for something he may not have done/ known about and for 'potentially' hurting Moseley when he didn't?

Let's not forget Tyson's attempted arm break? How long should he have got for that?

I think people need to calm down a tad.

Why would you respect a guy (if he did cheat) for being a cheat? We are given the hint (Read between the lines) with the round about leak from the California commission to the Nevada Commission that he's going to get hammered. You don't need give someone time to prepare a legal defense if he is innocent! You clear yourname right away to prevent undo innuendo and rumors from doing damage to your reputation. Or do you think the commission is really that stupid in this day and age of the internet?

And they are telling us that Capetillo will play the fall guy so Margarito can continue his career. Who the hell will give this guy the dignity of a fight if he's crew is found guilty. Cotto? for what? he was beating Margarito on the cards and without the plaster advantage he's done! Once this news is offical the guy is well done! His promoter is the only guy that can save his ass and he'll probably ream it more that prison would.

I did say once he has been found guilty/libel/whatever. I don't want to lynch the guy, but had Richardson not seen he certainly would have been hitting Mosley with those. It's not as if he had an attack of conscience and removed them himself. I personally feel there's no way he didn't know. If he didn't see it, it would have felt different and it should have at least begged the question, "Hey, did you do something different with the wraps?"

If I plot to kill my wife and I get arrested I wouldn't get a slap on the wrist for that. I don't think he should be banned, but I think his punishment should be significant. It would have been worse than what Judah did and it would have been worse than what Tyson did to Holyfield. Both were year-long suspensions and the Tyson attempted arm break should have been another suspension. It's probably the difference between a travel call on a lesser player versus Lebron James getting away with the same thing. Margarito gets nowhere near the credit a Tyson would. I'm not saying it's right, just saying how it probably is.

You have to get Margarito to confess he knew, by addressing the normal behavior of hand wrapping. It's basically a game at this point. Like the article says is there going to be a fall guy? And will the commission use the hammer on Margarito and to what degree if there is?

Actually a very nice point but I have somewhat of an small idea of the internal bond and communications that are not only existent in a dressing room but throughout a training camp between fighter and trainer.On one hand I would think that after so many years together at a contender and championship level there is less need for a fighter to scrutinize and micro manage his trainer on his everyday duties...and vis versa.A trainer mentors,over sees,guides and corrects among other things as far as I know.The fighter needs to and should be focused on the ring.Just a huge leap in assumption to conclude Tony had knowledge of any thing that frankly has yet to be determined in detail in commission findings.......shite,we don't even know what we know as far as the "it" and to presume we do with a mans career at stake is rash Imo.We're putting the cart before the horse.And no,I'm not making excuses for something or someone that we do not know the full deal on yet...that would be premature.

I'm not wanting to get into this before we know the results of the inquiry but I read one guy who says he's been boxing for 20 years and said there's no way on earth anybody doesn't know what's in their wraps. Is this true?

Is it just me or is this taking a crazy amount of time to get the results?
I mean if it was plaster would it not be dry and rock hard now? u think these experts would have been able to sort this shit by now...

It's not the "potential" cheating by hurting another boxer that he should be punished. You are supposed to follow the rules and if true, he didn't "almost" cheat because he didn't get in the ring. He cheated and got caught. Or else, the commission wouldn't have taken the sample. They would just say "Ok, you know better Antonio. Behave" lol.

It's probably because the statement will include the results, the punishment and the precident for the punishment to make sure that it can stick legally. If it was nothing, I think they would have said that already. "We checked and it's just gause" wouldn't take that long, IMO.

The only difference is there was no allegation that plaster of paris was used. However, it was still alleged that he was loading his gloves & putting extra power on his punches. Here's an interview with Bouie Fisher, the trainer who found it, the bit about Trinidad's wraps is about halfway down

This is absolutely true. I boxed for 17 years and am now a coach and trainer. I wrap hands and have had them wrapped hundreds of times. After a couple of years you can tell every little bit of difference with the gauze. You can tell if its too tight, if there is more or less tape, if there is more or less gauze, and definitely if there is something(especially plaster) added. If Margarito says he did know then he is lying. But what can he really say? He has no other way out. He must play ignorant. I was a Margarito fan but knowing how hard it is in the ring without loaded your gloves I can no longer stand him or his team. This is capital punishment for boxing. Ignorant or dishonest fans can play the "innocent until proven guilty" card all they want but there has to be a lot of truth to this. The approach Margarito's trainer is trying "there was too much gauze" doesn't get you suspended and investigated or a representative of the commission spreading a rumor that is a plaster like substance. I was on the circuit for many years and fighters get told regularly they have too much gauze or tape and never has one of them got suspended. Because there is nothing to investigate. Gauze and tape are LEGAL. Gauze, tape, and vaseline are legal and if you have too much you are instructed to remove. They make them rewrap it or remove it all the time and most times the fans hear nothing of it. Fighters want to find the hardest fist they can have but are restricted to using only what is allowed, gauze and tape, and an approved discretionary amount. This whole situation disgusts me because I have heard so many people try to cop Margarito out in anyway possible. Ignorance, conspiracy, innocent until proven guilty, blah blah blah. Put yourself in the ring across from a guy who is suspended while being investigated for loading his gloves with stone. Imagine you were brutally beaten and knocked out by a guy, like Cotto, who even before his next fight is caught with plaster like substance in his wraps. Would you have the same pro Margarito take? Be dishonest in this forum but keep it real with yourself. People who box are disgusted and rightfully so.
