Statement from Nate Campbell
Full Article: Statement from Nate Campbell | Fightnews - Boxing News Updated 24/7
Snippet:
Former unified lightweight champion and current jr. welterweight contender Nate Campbell released the following statement exclusively to Fightnews.com regarding the result of Saturday night’s WBO championship bout against Timothy Bradley:
“First of all, I want to let everyone know that I am OK. There is no permanent damage to my retina. I was taken from ringside to the hospital, and was treated for what they called a vitreous hemorrhage behind my left eye. The ophthalmologist that treated me at the hospital advised me that the impairment to the vision in my left eye should clear up completely within a few days to a week at most. Never in my career have I had an injury like this where I simply couldnt see out of an eye. I’ve had cuts 100 times worse than this that I fought through, and would have done the same in this instance, however this was something different. This was not something my cutman could have dealt with.
Seems like the cut wasn't the biggest issue for Campbell, whats your opinions? I remember Tyson saying he had similar eye problems when he was dealing with Holyfields headbutts and that it made him feel light headed, seems like Nate was dealing with some eye issues from the headbutt as well, further detail into the interview makes it seem like the ref really was in the pocket for Bradley but thats of course Nate's perspective and I'll let you be the judge of that after reading it all.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
never had a good enough chance to see how bad the cut was though on original inspection it did seem as if it was gushing out of several different areas.
If he had given his corner a good minute to work on it and then made the decision he couldnt fight on then fine. But that alone and the fact he was taking a pummeling leads me to believe that perhaps he did just take the cowards route out
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
to me nate campbell seems like one of the nicer and more genuine people in boxing. if he says he couldnt see out his eye then i believe he couldnt see out his eye
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I'd lean toward believeing Campbell to be honest, he does seem a genuine guy. Who knows though. Maybe a rematch will happen to try straighten things out. Maybe Campbell thought it would have been called a no contest for sure.....
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I believe him and think he got a rough deal. Maybe Bradley would have won anyway, but that is besides the point in a case like this. There should be a rematch, not fair on Campbell to have it decided like that.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
if there was any chance of campbell proving the injury is legit could the decision be overtured and the fight ruled a no contest

barrera suffered a worser cut against khan and decided even despite taking a pummeling to carry on because of the class act he is.
Im not questioning campbells heart at all as he is a ring warrior that has been punched more times than ive had hot meals. But perhaps he realised 3 rounds in he was on the verge of defeat and opted to take the easy route out without realising the ref had infact deemed the butt accidental!

Barrera didn't have a vitreous hemmorage. If Nate would have continued he could have been permanently blinded.

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I, too, tend to believe Nate. He had this shocked look on his face. I don't think Bradley was exactly dominating him until the butt. He was clearly bothered and trying to get the refs attention. I think most of Bradley's punches were glancing when Nate was on the ropes... he smelled blood. I give a lot of credit to Bradley for trying to finish him off. We all know if Bradley TKOed him at that point Campbell would have never had the chance to contest the butt and go for the NC.
It's not like he quit like Zab Judah VS Clottey... Nate was not talking about getting a NC. Personally I'm pissed Barrera lost because he fought on. We may not see him in the ring again!
I think both of these guys are really intelligent. Bradley... not a word from him about anything fair/unfair... he just gives the usual "I'm just doing my job, kicking ass taking names." Campbell, if he is lying about not being able to see, he played the perfect victim. But, again, not likely. This guy is world class as far as sportsmen go.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I have to agree with Nate and say he is telling the truth....If everyone remembers the replay he was motioning to the ref about the butt before Bradley even got the get in another punch....The combo Bradley threw at nate on the ropes was not as bad as seemed when looking at the replay he missed a lot of the shots or just grazed Nate so there was no trouble from that....
The second he got to his corner before even sitting he said he could not see.....this was something that happened instantly and I think it spooked Nate because like he said it was something he never experienced...was not like it was blood in the eye

yea i was thinking the same thing, plus the way that he basically glued his glove to his cut eye, gave me the feeling that it wasn't an ordinary cut

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I've sat thinking about this at work all afternoon and i'm seriosuly hopin that nate gets a rematch. Bradley was winning but no way was he giving Nate a beating atall. He was beating more glove than anything, doin an Amir Khan job on him.... Ha
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
Glad to hear there's no permanent damage. If he can prove what he is saying (which I'm sure he can), the decision might well be overturned.

I don't see it that way. I had Nate winning one of the first three rounds although I could see it going to Bradley. Also, against Diaz, through round 5 or so, Diaz was easily getting the better of Nate, but Nate came on strong in the end. I don't see how anyone watching the fight could say it was Bradley's fight. It wasn't even halfway done and really without the flurry at the end of round three, the fight looked close even with Bradley in the lead. Nate is a consummate warrior if he said he couldn't fight on, he couldn't fight on. He didn't make weight against Funeka, but fought anyway - unlike Guzman when Guzman was lined up to fight Nate.
The fight should be declared a no contest or a draw and there should be a rematch.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I had Nate losing the first 3. He just was getting out worked. I believe the guy. Why risk blindness to prove your heart? From what I have read/heard from the guy, he's one of the good guys- full of intergrity. I know due to how the fight started it looks like an easy out for Nate, but I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
How long do injuries like these take to heal?
I'm just wondering how long in the future a rematch would be should the decision be overturned and one be ordered.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
Nates full of crap. He saw that he was in with a guy who was going to keep punching and punching and punching--and he was looking for a way out. These two could fight ten times and Nate would lose ten times. When one guy is nearing his peak/prime and the other guy has passed his, the inflection point always favors the former (with a few exceptions, of course). Nate was looking at the ref throughout the fight. It was obvious he knew he was in for a good ass whupping--at least to me it was. Nate has become a primo headcase.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
Alot running through the grey matter but will have to ramble on after work:-X.I dont doubt the mans heart & his professionalism....nor do I doubt his savvy when it comes to experiencing the dark under belly that is boxings mind games...or as Lennox Lewis deemed them, politricks. And I do believe that guile played a part of his hastiness to call for....by himself....the stoppage without any examination or treatment given by the doctor or cutman. You roll the dice when you enter the ring, and you roll them in other fashions also.Knowing what we know-hear now his fans must take him at his word...and at the end of the day thats what a man has to stand on.Was it strategy, was it a bit of legit panic and concern, was it pride etc & not wanting a tko on his resume in this manner? Thats all on him now.......bottom line is that when a fighter says he cannot see to a doctor, fight is over. But the one thing that sticks with me is him viewing the cut on the overhead screen, turning the head looking at it and only then saying he could not see over and over and all but demanding a stoppage.I have always liked Nate and will continue to do so,just putting it out there.
One thing thats getting the shaft here Imo is Bradley. The man is a solid professional and faces all comers and has proven himself worthy of the Title Champion. He's taking alot of shit frankly and aside from getting his back up in the interview after Nate and others all but put him in a corner,he's conducted himself with respect and is showing improvement in his ability. The mantra pertaining to him as of late seems to be "hes not great at one thing but good at many things" nothing explosive and maybe a bit vanilla but I personally believe he's on his way to changing that and should be a face we should get used too!

Im sure you are Nate Campbell and know he's lying cause he just wanted to get out of a fight he was losing

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I think Nate is right that it should be a NC. The severity of the cut really doesnt matter. It put him at a disadvantage. Like ive said before though, Nate is like a good politician. He says the right things and explains things well. I do see him more and more as a self important person than an everyday guy which is why I originally liked him. I dont think there is another fighter on Nates level that puts out as many statements and gets as much airtime. I dont know, I still like him but hes starting to wear on me I guess.

He is becoming a just another head case/drama king. The whole world is against poor Nate. I'm sick of his rap because it diminsihes Bradley's fine performance. Sure, it should be a NC, but Nate would still lose in a rematch.

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
people who called campbell a liar and a quitter should be ashamed of themselves.
weeks ago nate ran after a crook who robbed a helpless old lady in a mall parking lot. tim bradley asked nate what if that robber has a gun and nate just said he has a gun too.
at least look at nate campbell as a whole person. look at what vernon forrest (rip) did too.

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
Rodriguez-Collins: Another argument for instant replay
On August 27, 2007 on ESPN, all action fighter Delvin Rodriguez, a native of the Dominican Repu , met talented Keenan Collins (12-2-1 with 8 Kos) of Reading, Pa., who was coming off a split decision loss. D-Rod entered the bout with a 20-2-1 record with 12 knockouts, and was coming off a KO loss to Jesse Feliciano for the USBA welterweight title. In that televised thriller, Rodriguez, dominated the early rounds, but was eventually worn down and savagely taken out by the non-stop pressure of Feliciano.
Both fighters were looking for redemption, but unfortunately both came away empty as an “accidental head-butt“ by Rodriguez opened a deep cut on the forehead of Collins in the second round and led to their scheduled 10-round welterweight bout Friday night being called a no-contest.
After a slow start, D-Rod caught fire in the second stanza, asserted himself, and made it pretty clear how this fight would end. The Collins corner, quickly seeming to recognize their fighter was in a place that was only going to get worse, contended the cut was too deep for him to continue. The fight was then halted by the doctor. Perhaps a slick move on the part of Collins’s corner, but jus another questionable one for boxing. It brought back less-than-pleasant memories of Camacho Jr vs. Jesse James Leija.
As the replay clearly showed, there was no butt, or at least none that was caught on the tapes. There was, however, a strong slashing right (the kind that cuts) that hit Collins exactly on the spot where the cut occurred. Still, Referee Eddie Claudio maintained the cut was the result of an accidental head butt.
Well, it was either one or the other, but based on what I saw (or didn’t see), I say the former. Indeed, most corners will not argue for the fight to be stopped under such conditions, that is, unless the corner belongs to a Camacho Jr against Leija. But there is one way to find out and hopefully the New York State boxing commission will use it by reviewing the tapes.
Manifestly, a boxing match should never be stopped while some judge watches a 3-minute replay of a round, but if the 60 seconds between rounds is enough time for the TV editors to give us replays of the hardest punches, ones that might have caused cuts, there is more than enough time for judges to watch those same replays? If Teddy Atlas or Joe Tessitore can do it in 30 seconds, surely a referee can as well.
It’s time for state commissions to get smart and start taking advantage of technology, albeit carefully, to help the referees and other officials make the right calls.
It was my time to shine and they ripped me off. Lennox Lewis on his draw with Evander Holyfield.
Postscript: The tapes were reviewed and D-Rod got the win.

Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
People need to quit the song of "fighters should fight through every damn thing." Fans have to take their emotions out of their decision making. They're fighters but they still have families to go back to after the fight. The doctor himself said there was blood behind his eye! If that is not grounds for stopping a fight then what the hell is??? Even if he was down 10 rounds no corner or doctor should've let him continue. When does a fight merit stoppage after a butt? He was bleeding behind the eye and if he would've taken further damage he would have been risking permanent blindness. Besides the fact that they were nearly butting all fight every replay on every camera angle showed the butt caused the cut and since it was before the fifth round started then the fight is ruled a no contest. The rules are clear and the so was the tape. No matter what you want it to be the tape shows it clearly that the ref blew it. This is actually a poster boy for stopping a fight due to accidental butt. You can call Nate heartless or whatever but that doesn't take away from the facts that are the butt caused the cut, he had blood behind his eye, he couldn't see, and the fight only went 3 rounds. No contest.
-
Re: Statement from Nate Campbell
I'm no Nate Campbell fan and I think he'll get beat by Bradley or Judah but the rules are the rules. If Pac can fight for a welterweight title at 145 then why can't Campbell get a no contest. :rules: Okay, I know I just started a Pac thread and I am now at risk of hate mail. ;D

Boxings fans have a mentality like that though. But its easy to call someone a scared when you aren't and never have been in their position. If you had a choice of risking permenant blindness or stopping and getting treated you'd choose getting treated to. Fighting on doesn't make you a "warrior" it makes you stupid. Being a warrior isnt what boxing is all about. It's about hitting and not get hit being a warrior is just a title boxing fans put on people that fight through adversity. But there's adversity and there's stupidity. If Campbell had fought on you may call him a "warrior" but when he's permenantly blinded you'd call him stupid. Your peers don't mean anything when it comes to your own health especially if they are so easily swayed by you getting out of the ring for your own good. If thats all it takes for fans to turn on you then I wouldn't want them.

Remember that.Lets face it,these scenarios happen almost every weekend with varing levels of exposure depending on the fighter. But ultimately the result is the same,A fighter has no say.Well,at least does not have hindsight of particular actions at that time.Instant replay is waaaaaaaaay over due and will benefit all.Think a big part is the commissions and promoters being hesitant to undercut or second guess their appointed officials,as that would call for them to ensure accountability.Stop and think of the amount of reversals, disputed verdicts we would be seeing.Last thing the officials want is a spotlight on them.
speaking of shite calls, have you seen the Anthony Thompson & Ishmail Arvin fight last year (?).Exact same thing happened as last weekend,3rd round clear head clash and bad cut on Thompson but he continued on until he was ruled Tko loser in 6th ??? Thompson was clearly winning the fight, dropped Arvin twice in the same round in that case. Now thats a shit call!!If anyone finds video of the chaos and dispute in the ring,Its very revealing and MUST see, around here in a FnF ESPN thread somewhere.

Thompson was clearly winning the fight, dropped Arvin twice in the same round in that case. Now thats a shit call!!If anyone finds video of the chaos and dispute in the ring,Its very revealing and MUST see, around here in a FnF ESPN thread somewhere.
Yeah that was a crap decision!!!
Thompson is apparently gonna fight Grady brewer again the same guy that is the first and only guy to knock him out

This is actually a poster boy for stopping a fight due to accidental butt. You can call Nate heartless or whatever but that doesn't take away from the facts that are the butt caused the cut, he had blood behind his eye, he couldn't see, and the fight only went 3 rounds. No contest.
Exactly. Another type of quit is an Ortiz-Maidana that is justifiable because the guy was seriously getting hammered but yet there was a thread here months ago where everyone called him a pussy and coward and he should have went out on his shield or whatever the fukk it meant. These guys have their family and themselves to look after first, not the fans lust to see a guy get permanently fukked up in the ring.
Hell at other boxing forums I remember posters saying Gerald McClellan was a dumbass for trying to be a warrior against Nigel Benn because of what happened after that fight, but I bet you if McClellan quit before the fatal round everyone would change their tune and call him a pussy.

Because at the end of the day fans don't care about the fighters as people(yet thats the first thing they want to judge them on) all they are to them is a fighter in the ring and if they quit they are a puss. Like I said they don't even care about a boxer as a person in those situations they only care about them as a boxer and that they get entertained and if they feel shortchanged they will take it all out on the fighter. Funny how you don't even see them as a person yet thats the first thing you judge them on. "Oh he quit cause he was blind in one eye. He was just looking for an excuse! He is a loser!" Its stupid. This whole "he HAS to be a warrior" mentality is whats killing boxing right now in terms of their fanbase. They just want to see bloody wars and they don't care who gets hurt because they arent in the ring. If Nate Campbell had fought on and gone on to be blind the rest of his life in that eye it's not worth the "respect" of your boxing fans if they so quickly turn on you in an instant. Screw those fans. Now maybe people will get why Bernard Hopkins didn't care about them. Because caring about the fans gets you beat.

Anthony Thompson & Ishmail Arvin was plain horrible. The ref actually saw the replay after the fight and still stood his ground. Then, the commission (one of the very worse in the counrty) backed him. Mondo Bizzro. :o:o
