It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
Honestly I felt it probably should have been a draw, but just appreciate the fight. Both guys did an amazing job. I knew by how Roach holds pads for Manny that Pacquiao will never truly feel comfortable walking into the zone he needs to be in, to land his hardest shots. Marquez understands this and really understood that Manny still squares up too much and takes bad angles, but Manny's footwork in terms of speed and balance was way better than Juan's which was suprising considering how much better Marquez's balance was in the previous fights. Some people will say that Manny is now past it, but that's not true, he just wasn't fighting the smaller faster, durable guys of the past that really gave him a hard time. If he can get into position to hit you then Manny is unstoppable. Bigger guys with slower minds and less commitment simply couldn't handle Manny. The bigger you go the less punches and quick exchanges happen in a fight, that is why Marquez did well, he stayed so mentally focused because he realized that Manny is dangerous at any moment, and he never stopped commiting to his offense. Manny also was amazing, how he slashed through with quick left hands, how he sometimes left JMM totally lost with his footwork. They both had terrific exchanges and they were both sharp, quick, and tactical. I honestly don't think this fight takes away from Pacquiao, he is still the same guy who dominated all those bigger guys, but they had styles he would look good against, they tried to be the bigger man against a guy who hits way harder than any of them expected from angles they often don't see. Instead of crying about who won appreciate the myriad of different things they did to try and get the edge on eachother. This is a once in a life time type display of this level of skill and ability so evenly matched.

Unbelievable. There are already many threads and hundreds of posts with an answer to your question.

Taeth, I couldn't agree with you more. I was 150% agree with you. Great scrap. Each fighter should hold their head high after that one. Hats off to both.

Really? There is no answer that I saw, just bitter people complaining about a close fight going in favor of the Pacquiao. I understand that Pacquiao fans can be obnoxious, but he fought an excellent fight and deserved to win as much as Marquez did if not more so with landing more and being more aggressive. I think it was an awsome fight and people should focus on that. At the end of the day Manny is better for boxing than JMM. He has been dominated by Floyd Mayweather, yet, and he has actually improves so much still every time he comes out. It's just he hasn't figured out how to deal got optimal distance and angles yet. That's Roach's fault from what I've seen of their training. Either way, people are way too bitter about this fight. Pacquiao is great for boxing, and they had a terrific fight. Him winning this fight is better for boxing.
-
Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
I wasnt too bothered who won I never am. I wanted JMM to though.
This was won by him more so than the other fights. I was :-\ on the first, because a three knockdown in one round, whats the most you can score for that
This last one isnt Mannys fault, this fight is boxing officials ruling for the greater good of boxing at the expense of a fighter for their own gains.
It was a good fight, Im about to watch it again.

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
Hardly "trivial" if you're Marquez. What's best for boxing should be entirely incidental to scoring the fight.

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
still havent seen the fight but did Marquez won 7 rounds clearly? i mean absolutely CLEAR CLEAR 7 rounds ??
because the way things are. even rounds goes to the aggressor/champion fighter.
like if MARQUEZ ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED 5 rounds and each of the 7 rounds were EVEN. PAC wouldhave still won 115-113 ( 10 POINT 'MUST' )
sorry cant resist posting :D :D

Unless there were 3 competent judges, in which case he would have lost 120-115.

You did not read my post well :)
If its an even round most judges give it to the aggressor and/or the champion. That's what i meant.
are you being serious on 120-115? i thought it was a joke that's why i loled
-Peace

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
120-115 with competent judges not for the actual fight, but for your hypothetical fight where Marquez dominates 5 rounds and the other 7 are even. I did read your post well, and I do agree that a lot of judges take the "tie goes to the champion" option, but that's why I specified that if there were competent judges, then in your scenario, Marquez should win comfortably.
But I wasn't suggesting that was how the actual fight should have been scored.

Not many rounds were clear as a bell mate. close fight but you will see Manny misses alot of shots and its through Marquez's skills that he does. JMM's shots are cleaner every time they land. Still to be fair you can count the hard shots on one hand and mostly one or the other fighter is only up by one or two shots each round.
I just watched it again and pretended I wanted Manny to win and looked harder at him and ignoring Juan more and I still got Juan winning it by one.
Manny looks busier (hectic at times in the last three rounds) but isnt landing as clean as Juan during the whole fight.

reading all the posts from this board its quite obvious that judges did score it that way. Two fighters fought evenly but some of the judges gave it to the agressor or the champion.
In the eye of the fans the counter puncher won convincingly because his rounds were very clear while the champs were not.
Its not a perfect way of scoring it. but judges can score it that way.
so yeah 120-115 if judges scores it a 10-10 on close rounds but that its not happening and is discouraged. Judges are encouraged to have a winner in each round. and in my hypothetical case the champion usually gets it 115-113.

boxing is scored on clean effective punching, which Marquez did all night, even more so than Pacquiao, the challenger went beyond what he had to to "beat" the champion convincingly, fuck me if now to beat the "champion" you have to clean his fucking clock

I am not talking about Pac-JMM 3. but the usual judging of today.
10-10 is discouraged and judges are encouraged to have a winner in each round.
sample were Tarver-JonesJr I
Tarver's rounds were clear but there were many close rounds that went to Roy. That's why the crowd booed.
IF JMM CLEALRLY WON 7 rounds as in crystal clear then you have an argument for robbery but even if you have 8 or 9 'closely contested' rounds for JMM then its not a robbery but a close fight.
Did you score 7 CLEAR rounds for JMM? this is a legit question.

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
It seems Marquez winning 8-4 is the general consensus from what I have been reading. I had it that and had it the same on rewatching.
Anyone thinking Manny won the fight is in cloud cuckoo land. It isn't trivial to argue that something very serious and wrong happened with the verdict that was given.
Miron Lang shouldn't be making excuses for this. Rounds are scored as they are, it is irrelevant who the champion is. A champion should not be receiving a free pass and especially when he is being outboxed for the vast bulk of the fight.

No, that is evaluating the fight on a round by round basis. I gave Manny 4 rounds because I think he won them.

Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez: round-by-round verdict - Telegraph
Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez Scorecard & Round by Round Winner, Christian News
This is the first two links I pulled off google "pacquiao vs marquez round by round" Now if I were looking for "marquez robbed round by round" I could come up with your conciseness and I's sure if I kept going more links would favor marquez but there is certainly no conciseness here. There was no schooling by either fighter. It was another close fight due to the lack of activity by both fighters and it could have been called either way.
Now, I know you know this so don't take this as an insult but I understand the way the fight is scored is using the 10 point must system. i.e. 10 points is awarded to the winner of the round and 9 to the loser not including knockdowns, blowouts or penalties. But you are allowed to score 10-10 if there is no clear winner and I also understand this is discouraged to prevent draws. Thus when you have a close fight like this boring ass fight (for a Pacquiao fight) the more aggressive fighter tends to get more rounds. Now I can't see the compubox number being off here because the of punches thrown is easy to track in this fight. So unless you can show me that my view was different than yours, This was nothing more than a close fight and no clear winner beyond what the judges scored.

Talking about two different things, though, in a couple of places. First, what does happen, vs. What should happen. The champ shouldn't get a 7-point edge for fighting 7 even rounds. Do some judges score it that way? Yeah, I agree that they do, but not only is it poor judging, there's no basis for it in the rules.
Secondly, when you say give it to "the aggressor or the champion," that's actually an important distinction; favoring the aggressor in a round is a legitimate element of scoring a fight (and a subjective one, as far as how much weight to accord it). Favoring the champion, though, unlike favoring the aggressor, is not a legitimate element of deciding a ballot. See earlier post for relevant excerpt from Nevada State Athletic Commission rules re:scoring.

The champion edge is a cliche, and does happen, but it's not good (or legal) judging. The aggressor part is.

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
Frankly, to say the fight wasn't close, isn't being honest.
I had the fight 6-6. Press row was split. Many, many writers had this fight a draw. Rafael who had Marquez winning the first two fights had this fight a draw too Pacquiao-Marquez: Manny Pacquiao picks off Juan Manuel Marquez, ready for Floyd Mayweather - ESPN. No, Marquez was not 'robbed' vs. Pacquiao - New York Boxing Blog - ESPN New York. Max Kellerman who I usually consider to be on point had the fight a draw too. Steve Kim from maxboxing.com had the fight 115-113 Marquez. Steven Edwards on boxingtalk.com had it 115-113 Pacquiao. Doveed Linder also from boxingtalk.com had it 6-6. Someone who I respect a ton for his boxing writing and his experience in boxing is Graham Houston. Graham Houston thought Pacquiao eeked out a win. NO CLOSURE: Manny Pacquiao W12 (maj.) Juan Manuel Marquez.
Goerge Willis from the New York Post - "it was a tough fight to score." http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/boxin...PD1gTqeGrikrkI
Compubox is not by any means the be all and end all, but compubox had Manny throwing 578 punches to Marquez's 436 and landing 176 punches to Marquez's 138. Manny led 117-100 on power punches. So, I don't think it's honest to say this fight wasn't close. I thought there were 3 rounds a piece that were clear and then there were 6 rounds that were damn tough to score.

Re: It was an amazing fight why are you guys argueing over trivial points?
There is no way JMM won 8-4, you would have had to been drunk to have either guy up by 4 rounds. In all honesty I think JMM did better than I expected, but if you look at who probably won the fight and I have again, it leans towards Manny. He landed, threw more was brining the pressure, and while JMM landed the bigger shots. It was a close fight, but Manny seemed like the guy that could have gone 15 rounds. They both fought great, and I honestly felt this was Manny's most complete performance, it's just his evolution to becoming more skilled did compromise him a little as Nacho predicted.

I thought also what came into play is that Manny couldn't hurt Marquez the way he had in the past because of the increased weight. Marquez carried the weight much better than anticipated and looked more solid at this weight than he had in his last few fights. It was very surprising to me.

because the way things are. even rounds goes to the aggressor/champion fighter.
like if MARQUEZ ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED 5 rounds and each of the 7 rounds were EVEN. PAC wouldhave still won 115-113 ( 10 POINT 'MUST' )
sorry cant resist posting :D :D
Unless there were 3 competent judges, in which case he would have lost 120-115.
Maybe you can give us a breakdown of your scorecard as to how you scored it round by round and which rounds are clearly for Marquez.
