I think Miles finally got off that empty train.
I think Miles finally got off that empty train.
About time, too. I don't get any pleasure watching a once great fighter being knocked around the ring by somebody he probably wouldn't have used as a sparring partner a few years ago.
I don't understand why anyone would want to watch either. Toney is a traveling sideshow, with a pathetic resemblance to what he once was.
Here it is if anyone wants to watch it. I've watched a couple rounds and Toney can still slip by and large. He's just soooo fucking fat and noticeably much slower than he used to be, even at heavyweight. He loads up on the right hand counters, but misses and falls down frequently.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"
Toney was old and horrible and this version of Toney is only a slip and a slide above a club fighter now. He can slip a punch, but he is easily outworked and if you just stay away from him he is nullified. HOWEVER, this is not the Toney of several years ago. This is a Toney who has abused himself to a horrible degree and the sluggishness, inability to throw after 5 rounds, and loss of speed, is testament to a man in his 40's fighting once a year and who steadfastly refuses to get into any semblance of shape.
The Toney who just moved up to HW was awesome and beautiful to watch. He didn't tire, he got stronger. He could throw superb crisp combinations. His defence and attack were one and the same. He was awkward and very hard to hit cleanly. One really shouldn't be saying 'Oh miles, I told you so' when talking of the Klits. That Toney was an excellent athlete and would have done VERY well. Sam Peter 1 saw Toney fight him much better than Wlad did.
In boxing you always get revisionists saying 'But look at so and so in their final 3 fights, it shows they weren't good enough'. Just not true. James Toney was always as good as he said he was. He just got old, and failed to realise it. As a fan, you do much the same.
