"Juan Manuel Marquez believes Canelo should get stripped of the title"
"Many questions have been raised regarding Canelo's lack of interest in fighting David Benavidez; as for now, it looks like a mandatory title defense for him, yet he has been avoiding offers presented. Canelo may most likely end up fighting Jermall Charlo; next, he is expected to fight to him in September – it's not officially confirmed, but it appears to be a done deal.
The veteran Juan Manuel Marquez recently spoke about Canelo; he doesn't seem to be very pleased with the fact that Canelo is turning down a fight against David Benavidez and is instead fighting other opponents. He believes Canelo should be stripped of the title.
Recently on ProBox TV, Espanol, Juan Manuel Marquez spoke about Canelo's indecision to fight Benavidez, who, in his eyes, is a worthy title challenger for the belts in Canelo's possession. Marquez believes the respected authorities should snatch Canelo's belts since he's avoiding a title defense that the whole world wants to see.
"They have to ignore and strip the champion of the title if he does not want to make his mandatory defense, and it seems that it is the World Boxing Council that has to exercise the regulations," Marquez said as quoted by marca.com.
"We are clear, the regulations have to be carried out, of course we know that Benavidez is the official challenger and he has to fight Canelo Alvarez". Marquez continued: "He is the undisputed champion at 168 pounds, he has to make the mandatory defense, if Canelo doesn't want to fight Benavidez, he has to leave the title vacant".
Canelo was also interested in a rematch against Bivol, but due to failed negotiations, he had to look for new opponents. Jermal Charlo has been inactive for more than 2 years, and it will be interesting to see if he is actually next for Canelo. In the upcoming days, we could get an official announcement for Canelo's next fight."
That's not a hating boxing fan talking. That's a true Mexican great and warrior.
I've always liked JMM.![]()

i always liked dinamita but he has always seemed envious of canelo's success. has juan got the same energy about errol not fighting an ibf mandatory since carlos ocampo or what about jermall not defending against ibf mandatory bakhram murtazaliev? was juan asked for his opinion on those mandatories?

I think JMM limits his opinions to other Mexicans.
Although Mexico and my home of Puerto Rico have always had one of the best rivalries in boxing... and I always root for my home fighter... I've learned to admire (and be a fan of) Mexican warriors in the past. Warriors who exemplified what it is to fight ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. Diva clauses be damned. If they lose a championship fight... so what. They come back stronger for the next fight and learn from their mistakes.
Canelo is none of that. I've ALWAYS criticized and disliked him for that... and it's heartening to see a fellow Mexican do it also.

That's a copout. And comparing JMM to Canelo is an insult to Marquez. They are nothing alike. JMM never did any diva rehydration clauses. Probably very few, if any, catchweights. He never purposely waited on fighters to get old to fight them. He never sought unfair weight advantages. He fought all comers. Any time, any place. He didn't have the judges in his back pocket like Ginger does. He never called himself the Face of Boxing. He let his fights do the talking. When he lost... so what? He went on to the next challenge. There are some that claim JMM ducked Naseem? Sure. Just like there is always someone who comes from the woodwork to claim X ducked Y, and that applies to just about any fighter. Was JMM known as a ducker? Hardly.
So to those who've insinuated I dislike Canelo because he's Mexican (not you)... they're being ignorant. JMM... Barrera...Finito Lopez... all these are among my favorite Mexican fighters of the past. But I don't like cheaters (Clenbuterol)... I don't like divas... I don't like "marinating" fights (GGG when Canelo could easily fight at 160, but chose to meet JCC Jr. at 170)... I don't like fanboyism... I don't like jumping entire weight divisions to pick off lame zebras (Ginger's specialty)... IN FACT... there's a lot of things on the list.
Even many MEXICANS don't like Ginger. They know he's nothing like the past warriors. He's a coddled cherry-picker.
who's comparing the two? i said they have both fought against some of the best fighters of their time. juan didn't fight nazeem when the fight was offered to him & juan was hardly ever in the position to call the shots. popular fighters have always been given advantages throughout the sports history, it's nothing new. do i agree with it? no. does it happen? yes. you don't like divas, that's cool, in my opinion miguel cotto was one of the biggest divas of his time but i appreciate the good fights he gave, just like i appreciate the good fights canelo has given. there's a lot of things wrong with the sport of boxing. popular stars getting advantages is way down on my list
