So if that rationale was the case then why would Bush be a threat to the general election of John McCain? And why did John McCain win states that Bush never came close to winning

For example the Northeastern states....McCain was a BIG winner there and those are the same people that despise W.
McCain did what ALL candidates do(if they are from the same party)...seek the approval (whether wanted or not) of the current President.
Al Gore got Clinton's approval...was a big deal made out of that

Gore wasn't much like Clinton...he just got his support.
