Just eating protein after exercise is pretty much as good. In theory a shake would be better as digestion would be quicker...but the difference is minimal. Speed of absorption (if its whey mixed with water), convenience (not having to cook a meal), and the fact that they taste good and act as a sort of treat are the main reasons i like them.
