Agreed. Mayweather is number 2 (like P4P lists mean jack shit) until he beats a more viable opponent. That being said, I do think he beats Mosley/Pacquiao or whoever else he fights next.

Cotto - Pac is a much more competitive and important fight than Mayweather - Marquez, though PBF was extremely impressive in his victory tonight.

What does that have to do with anything? Pac did not become the consensus P4P #1 based on that fight. Both fights were impressive victories, but Mayweather, in some respects, did what was expected; Pacquiao was expected to lose to ODH. Mayweather fought a great fight tonight, I was very impressed and I have dedicated a large amount of my posts tonight to defending and lauding him. However, what he did tonight in no way diminishes or surpasses Pacquaio's recent accomplishments in my opinion. I think PBF is the better fight but that Pac is more deserving of being P4P #1 at the moment (which just goes to show you how utterly useless and subjective P4P lists are).

Pac scavenged Floyds scraps, the facts are the facts man

Floyd fought and beat a fresher younger DLH at 154 giving up every advantage including glove type, ring size etc...

Manny beat a corpse of DLH

Floyd punished and KO'D a fresh hungry undefeated Hatton.

Pac KO'D beat a dented version who clearly wasnt the same physically or mentally.

Floyd just destroyed a guy Pac went life and death with 2x... Before anyone jumps on the weight train come fight night Pac weighed about 147 for their contest last time out..

floyd could beat PAC, cotto, and Ali on the same night with one arm and people would say "oh yes ....but he's ducking mosley. Floyd must fight for other things cause credit he'll never get. Shame

Im not bashing Floyd, he did an excellent job last night but people are going to continue not giving him credit until he fights a natural welterweight. Marquez is a great fighter and Mayweather took him to school but you cant say the weight didn't effect JMM. He didn't carry his weight near as well as Pacquiao up to Welterweight. I hope the Pacquiao-Cotto fight will be much more entertaining, which it almost has to be! Pacquiao comes out on top in a hard fight to set up possibly the most money makin fight of all time! When all the dust has settled, all the smoke cleared, Pacquiao will be the King of boxing!

No they wouldn't....fact is floyd is only fighting little guys with big names. If Floyd were to beat mosley there wouldn't be anyone left for him to fight. But he's smart or his handlers are. They're waiting on Shane to look too old then he will fight him.

Don't know when fanboys will get it...Floyd himself said it... "I fight for money not bragging rights"....but then gets mad when not referred as p4p number 1...

Get a grip dude. Remember. There is a difference between weighing more than your opponent at the weigh in than during a fight. Marquez is a great LIGHTWEIGHT, not a great welterweight. Marquez has never been known for speed or even defense, just toughness and good counterpunching. He showed the former in taking some great shots from Floyd but was unable to show the latter, mainly because of respect for Floyd's power and his defensive skills as well.

Floyd beat silly another opponent that HE chose as opposed to an opponent the general public wants to see him fight. From the beginning, the general public did not sanction this fight and most asked "why?"

There is no question that Floyd is great, but unless he steps in the ring with Mosley, Cotto, or Manny, he will forever be doubted (at least in my mind) as to what he can do against perceived great opponents.

Mayweather is not number 1 again after beating a great small lightweight at welterweight friend.

You are probably gonna mention how Pacquiao weighed around the 147 mark for his fights with Marquez but the difference was Marquez was fighting at a weight he was comfortable at, where his speed was at his best, where at welterweight his handspeed was clearly diminished.

A win over Pacquiao would give him back his spot as number 1.

Either way you look at it.. Floyd still has the better resume and at the end of the day is STILL unbeaten, so #1 P4P is the only place you could possibly place him.
That's very much not true and up for debate. A case could be made for either man.

Once Floyd's weight was announced, Marquez immediately turned to his promoters and was like "WTF!?" It may have been in his head a bit but I think it was more of Floyd being much better than he had anticipated. Mayweather has that effect on people.

I agree with this post completely. I said it from the get go that I thought this was a mismatch. Marquez was a great lightweight but I even think lightweight was higher than his best weight.

If a fight with the P4P #1 guy is possible, then he doesn't lose his spot until he gets beaten. Floyd needs to beat Pac. Beating #2 doesn't make you #1 (Even though he DESTROYED #2).

    Exactly.

I think Marquez could still make 130 if he wanted to.

He only moved up to 135 to chase a third fight with Pacquiao.
