"King" David Tua recaptured the crown of New Zealand boxing today when the former world heavyweight title challenger put an end to the aspirations of rugged Kiwi Shane Cameron at The Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton.
It was well expected that Cameron would have to stick and move if he were to keep the much shorter and huge-punching Tua at arm's length and the 31 year old tried to do just that once the bell sounded.
But the far more experienced Tua knew how to negate Cameron's attempts and was soon putting dents into his opponent with big, booming shots.
Cameron was just about finished by the end of the the first round but was saved by the bell. No such luck came to his aid in the second as Tua simply picked up where he left off and the one-sided contest was mercifully halted.
With the win, Tua moves to 50-3-1 (43) and picks up the WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental heavyweight belts.
Cameron sees a four bout win streak snapped and now stands at 23-2 (20).
There were good fights on the undercard as southpaw veteran Colin Wilson, 35-25-1 (21), stopped John Hopoate, 12-4 (11), in the fourth during a battle between former Aussie heavyweight champs.
In a trio of six round bouts that went the distance, cruiserweight Daniel Ammann, 18-2-1 (4), posted a win over Lawrence Tauasa, 31-7-1 (18), while cruiser Moyoyo Mensah, 20-8-1 (9), outpointed American import Max Alexander, 14-5-2 (2), and light middle Steve Heremaia, 13-3 (6), got the verdict over Frank LoPorto, 12-4-2 (5).
