Boxing In Germany: Sylvester Retains IBF Crown Against Lyell

IBF middleweight boss Sebastian Sylvester kept his title last night against late replacement opponent Billy Lyell at Jahnsportforum in Neubradenburg, Germany.

American veteran Lyell, 21-8 (4), used his experience to get into the later rounds against the stocky, volume punching champion but Sylvester, 33-3 (16), maintained a pace that proved too much for the challenger.

The end came at 0:37 of round ten with the champion well ahead on the cards as Lyell’s corner pulled their man out of the contest.

Sylvester makes the first defense of the title he won in the same arena last August in a split decision against Giovanni Lorenzo.

Two highly accomplished heavyweights were on the undercard and both suffered losses.

Former WBO champion Lamon Brewster, 35-6 (30), was stopped in the eighth frame of a scheduled ten by towering Finnish prospect Robert Helenius, 11-0 (7), while 43 year old ex-European, British and Commonwealth king Matt Skelton, 22-5 (19), underwent his third consecutive stoppage loss, surprisingly KO’d in four by highly regarded Bulgarian novice Kubrat Pulev, 5-0 (3).
