Boxing Interview: Dominic Ingle

"Junior Will Box Anyone Put In Front Of Him"

WBC light welterweight champion Junior 'The Hitter' Witter "will box anyone put in front of him," Dominic Ingle, the 32 year olds trainer said today.

"Junior has never backed out of a fight and as long as it is WBC approved he will fight," Ingle continued.

Following his win over DeMarcus Corley, the former WBO and USBA light welterweight champion, Witter 34-1-2 (19) is a formidable 1/20 favourite with Corals to defeat Arturo 'El Silencioso' Morua 24-7-1 (13) at Alexandra Palace on 20 January.

Ingle explained the reason for selecting Morua, beaten in three of his last ten fights, as Witter's initial title defence:

"Junior has been lacking in fights recently," said Ingle.

"We waited eleven months for the Corley fight. It seemed like it was never going to come.

"Junior has never turned a fight down and while Morua may not have been the fight we would naturally have desired he is 32 years old now and wants to start cashing in."

Responding to my statement that Witter had seemed a little subdued at the weigh-in before the Corley fight in September 2006, Ingle said:

"He is just very relaxed, he is not subdued. Unless an opponent starts bad-mouthing him he doesn't let things bother him."

"Junior is in good form and is training really hard," he continued.

"He took three weeks off for a holiday after that fight and he has been back since October and in training for nine weeks now. He has been training every day. He trained Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Year's Day. He realises what he needs to do."

Witter clearly intends to grasp the opportunity that many thought he would never achieve and has his sights set on the light welterweight division's stars.

"We are not looking past this fight," said Ingle but admitted Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales were "in the frame" with Hatton in the background.
