At the Robin Park Sports Centre, Wigan, England, on Saturday night, Mark Thompson of Heywood, Lancashire, won the Challenge Belt by ousting normally durable Kevin McCauley of Stourbridge in the second round. Caught by a head-shot, McCauley was then pressured in Thompson’s corner where he landed on the canvas. McCauley was given time to recover before standing for the decision from Michael Pass.

Also on the Steve Wood – VIP Boxing Promotions show, popular Jon Kays of Ashton-under-Lyne survived a cut and a slip to score a points’ win over Readings’ Ibrar Riyaz (59-55) while Adam Ismail of Liverpool lost out on points to Manchester’s Darryl Sharpe (59-56).

There were four debutants making their first pro outings on the night. All were successful with points wins.

Results as follows:

Mark Thompson (Heywood) v Kevin McCauley (Stourbridge)
8 x 2 Super-Welterweight Challenge Title

Thompson wins by TKO Round 2

Adam Ismail (Liverpool) v Darryl Sharpe (Manchester)
6 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest

There wasn’t enough work from Ismail, hence, Sharpe gets the points’ win 59-56

Jon Kays (Ashton-under-Lyne) v Ibrar Riyaz (Reading)
6 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest

Things didn’t get off to a great start for ‘2Smokes’ Kays who sustained a cut to the right eye in the second round from a clash of heads. He also touched the canvas seconds later which was deemed a ‘slip’ by referee Andrew Wright. He seemed to have lost ‘heart’ at the start of the third frame but picks it up in the last half of that round. Riyaz was, as usual, a tough opponent but Kays gets the win on points 59-55

Luke Evans (Salford) v Lee Connelly (Killamarsh, Derbys.)
4 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest

There was some great action from ‘Evo’ at the end of the second round putting Connelly under pressure. Evans wins on points 40-36

Ian Halsall (St.Helens) v Craig Derbyshire (Bentley)
4 x 3 Super-Bantamweight Contest

Derbyshire wins on points 39-37

Rick Skelton (Penrith) v Viktors Drizlionoks (Wolverhampton via Latvia)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest

A close contest with Skelton just nicking it on points 39-38

Mark Jeffers (debut) (Chorley) v Scott Hillman (Eastbourne)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest

Nice display of boxing from debutant Jeffers who dominates from the off. Despite the variety of powerful punches – tough opponent Hillman does well to keep upright and sees out all four rounds.

Impressive Jeffers gets off the mark with a points win 40-36

Arthif Daniel (Manchester) v Matthew Ashmole (Swansea)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest

Not enough work from ‘Dr. Hitman’ Daniel, hence, Ashmole wins on points 39-37

Ricky Starkey (debut) (Liverpool) v Joe Beeden (Swindon)
4 x 3 Bantamweight Contest

It was a frantic and messy fight at times with Beeden sustaining a cut to the corner of his left eye in the first round.

Starkey wins on points in his first pro outing 40-37

Morgan Jackson (Blackburn) v Anthony Fox (debut) (Westbury, Wilts., via Germany)
4 x 3 Super-Middleweight Contest

Jackson sustained a cut to the right brow in the second round against a very game opponent in the form of debutant – Anthony ‘The Matador’ Fox. Jackson looked to flag a bit in the third round and seemed to switch off in the fourth and final round leaving Fox to secure the points’ win 40-37

Sean Crowley (debut) (Liverpool) v Qasim Hussain (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest

Crowley wins on points 40-36 in his first pro outing
