It was prospect night on Friday evening's 8 Count/Golden Boy shared bill from Cicero Stadium in Chicago with heavyweight Otis Griffin and bantamweight Abner Mares coming through victorious in WBO NABO title contests. Featherweight Johnathon Oquendo was not so lucky as the previously undefeated man from Bayamon, Puerto Rico was disqualified in the sixth round of a scheduled ten.
29 year old Griffin, 17-1-2 (6), of Sacramento, CA knocked out local man Mike Nevitt, 14-1 (5), in the sixth round to annex the vacant WBO NABO Light Heavyweight crown.
Going into the bout Griffin had maintained a busier schedule than his rival since turning pro three years ago and that along with a six year difference in age, may have proved to be the undoing of 35 year old Nevitt.
Highly touted prospect Mares, 12-0 (8), won the WBO NABO Featherweight belt with a six round stoppage of Colombia's Angel Antonio Priolo, 30-6 (20), who loses his fifth straight contest.
Super bantamweight Oquendo, 12-1 (7), was DQ'd in the sixth round against veteran Oscar Andrade, 36-26-1 (18), when the Puerto Rican prospect was cited one too many times for low blows.
