Ten Month Anniversary Of Torres vs. Holt I Boxing Debacle Passes Without Incident

It was 10 months ago today, September 1, 2007, when WBO junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres from Barranquilla, Colombia, and mandatory challenger Kendall Holt, from Paterson, NJ, rumbled for the world title inside the Jumbo Saloon Country Club in Torres’ hometown.

Fought in a bandbox with negligible security and a referee who lost control of the situation, the fight ended abruptly, and arguably, prematurely, late in the 11th round with Holt holding a slim lead on two of the three scorecards.

Torres was awarded a TKO victory thus keeping his world title despite the fact Holt was still able to defend himself, though he was having problems keeping his footing due to a ringmat made slippery from?fans hurling “innumerable full beer cans and bottles, and cans of soda and water in the ring.”

In the aptly-named “No Excuses,” Torres and Holt will finish what they started 10 months ago in a world championship rematch. Only this time it will be under the auspices of the Nevada State Athletic Commission at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

And unlike before, US boxing fans will be able to see it live on?Showtime this Saturday July 5, as the main event of a special edition of “ShoBox: The New Generation”, beginning at 11 P.M. ET/PT and delayed on the west coast.
