Boxing Perspective: Junior “The Hitter” Witter
Junior ‘The Hitter’ Witter, 37-4-2 with 22 KO’s, started his career back in 1997, in which he achieved the Commonwealth, British and European Light Welterweight titles before capturing the WBC belt, which he defended twice before losing it to Timothy Bradley.
Questions have arisen since his last few outings as to whether or not Witter can still perform at the level he used to. In his last fight, he lost to Victor Puiu 18-1-2.
Puiu is a decent enough fighter but nothing special, in reality the Witter of a few years back would have demolished him; in effect, the writing was on the wall. Before that, Witter lost to Devon Alexander, who was 18-0-0.
Alexander is a young, hungry, gifted fighter who belongs in the upper echelons of the division. Witter clearly did not have the legs, or the reflexes that allowed him to fight like he used to and he retired at the end of the eighth round, culminating in the only stoppage loss in his career.
Witter had a very hard career, and it was not the case of him not wanting the big fights, if anything, he would not shut up about fighting the top of the division whenever he had the airtime.
In a way, he made a rod for his own back in being such an awkward fighter…no one wanted to get involved. He was maximum risk, minimum gain.
Often he would openly call for bouts with Floyd Mayweather or Zab Judah, a wish he had granted by the latter, much to his detriment. Another thorn in his side, as he saw it, was a certain Mr. Hatton.
Unfortunately for Witter, whilst he was moving up through the paid ranks, there was another fighter, at light welterweight, who was making his own waves in the sport, Ricky Hatton. (more…)

Boxing Result: WBA Champ Cotto Stops Mayorga In Las Vegas
Miguel Cotto solidified his hold on the WBA light middleweight title with a hard fought defense against former WBA and WBC welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The fight started with a bang as the first round sees both men skipping the feeling out process and trading bombs.
The second sees Cotto starting to jab and landing effective left hooks to body. Mayorga has good moments with right hands but is backing up. Mayorga starts to make Cotto miss and gets in a few good counters, which make Cotto a little more defensive.
The third sees Mayorga land a big counter right before Cotto scores with a big counter left. Mayorga walks to the corner, demanding repeatedly that Cotto fight him there, but Cotto remains composed and measured however. Cotto goes back to the body as Mayorga misses with big rights. Cotto lands a big right at the bell.
Mayorga tries to catch Cotto with single counters in the fourth, but Cotto is landing combinations. Cotto goes back to the jab, keeping Mayorga off balance. Mayorga starts backing up again after a big right from Cotto. Mayorga avoids Cotto’s jab by crouching, looking to land a bomb, but Cotto makes him miss the clumsy combinations. (more…)

Boxing Result: Judah Regains IBF Title Against Mabuza
Nearly 10 years after losing his IBF light welter title against Kostya Tszyu, Zab Judah put on an impressive performance Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ to once again put the red and gold belt around his waist.
The New York southpaw did well to keep his composure against aggressive brawler Kaiser Mabuza, never allowing the pressure put on by the South African to change his game plan.
Mabuza tried to repeat the past successes of Judah victors Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto and Carlos Baldomir but the rangy slugger didn’t possess the boxing skills of those world champions and Judah did well to take advantage of that difference.
Judah was able to use his edge in quickness and solid footwork to avoid the charges of Mabuza early in the contest and getting ahead on the scorecards.
In the fourth Judah’s glove touched the canvas and he was accessed a knockdown but he wasn’t hurt. (more…)

Boxing Preview: Matthew Hatton vs. Saul Alvarez

© Tom Hogan – HoganphotosTonight at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California, ‘Magic’ Matthew Hatton 41-4-2 26 KO’s, takes on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 35-0-1 26 KO’s, for the vacant WBC light middleweight belt.
This will be the first world title shot for both fighters, and probably Hatton’s last. Hatton has had a hard career, with his fair share of ups and downs, and the high point, so far, being his European title victory beating of Gianluca Branco in early 2010.
Alvarez, on the other hand, has had things pretty much his way. His only blemish on record is a draw very early in his career, and last year he was wobbled against tough contender Jose Miguel Cotto, albeit having regained composure, Alvarez put Cotto down in the second, and finished him in the ninth.
Hatton has often been overlooked as nothing more than an opponent with a famous brother and a famous last name. The truth of the matter is Hatton may not be the most beautifully gifted boxer in the world, nor is he a knockout artist, but he makes up for that with work-rate, determination, steely resolve and a good chin.
For someone who is perhaps not the most talented fighter, he has accomplished a great deal with the tools he does have at his disposal.
With some early hiccups on the record, his 14th and 16th fights he lost, the former on points, the latter by TKO. He continued to climb the domestic ladder whilst big brother Ricky shot off into big money fights and world title shots.
After a while, Matthew got his shot at an eliminator for the British title against Alan Bosworth. Hatton was disqualified in the tenth round for repeated low blows. (more…)
