  • Boxing Preview: Zab Judah vs. Kaiser Mabuza

Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ sees a clash between Zab Judah and Kaiser Mabuza for the vacant IBF light welter crown.

For Judah, 40-6 (27), this bout is the culmination of his return to the 140 pound division, where he held the IBF belt from 2000-2001 and the WBO strap in 2003 before going on to greater glory as a welter, winning the WBC, WBA and IBF titles in 2005.

The New York southpaw hit upon hard times at the starting in 2006, losing the WBC bauble at the hands of Carlos Baldomir before dropping world title contests to Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey over the next two years.

Starting in 2010, Judah returned to light welter, halting former WBC interim lightweight ruler Jose Armando Santa Cruz in three before climbing off the canvas to post a very close split decision over the previously unbeaten Lucas Matthysse to capture the NABO trophy and also the number two spot in the IBF and WBO rankings.

Facing Judah in Newark tomorrow night is South Africa’s Mabuza, 23-6-3 (14), who brings an eight contest winning streak to the table.

Mabuza had a tough start in the fight game in 2000, losing his maiden voyage to fellow debutante and future IBF welter titlist Issac Hlatshwayo, who also turned back Mabuza in 2003 for the South African lightweight trophy. (more…)

  • Boxing Preview: Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito

Multi-weight wonder Manny Pacquiao climbs in the ring once again tonight when the 31 year old southpaw meets Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBA light middleweight title at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

After winning world titles at flyweight, super bantam, featherweight, super feather, lightweight, light welter and welterweight, Pacquiao, 51-3-2 (38), will now try his hand at light middleweight.

In the opposite corner will be Margarito, 38-6 (27), who previously held the WBO, IBF and WBA belts at welter and, with a five inch height and considerable reach advantage, represents a very tall hurdle for Pacquiao to clear.

The key to this contest will be Pacquiao’s quickness and he will almost certainly use his advantage in this department to offset the edges that Margarito holds in other areas.

Neither Shane Mosley or Miguel Cotto had difficulty in finding the target against Margarito and it’s almost a certainty that Pacquiao will be able to enjoy the same success. (more…)

  • Boxing In South Africa: N’Dou vs. Mwelase For IBO Title Tonight

IBO welterweight champ Lovemore N’dou heads back to the ring tonight, putting his belt at risk against challenger Bongani Mwelase at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, South Africa.

At age 39, N’dou, 47-11-2 (31), is still going strong as evidenced by his performances last year that saw “The Black Panther” defeat Phillip N’dou on points for the IBO strap before posting a draw against Matthew Hatton in England to retain the title.

The iron-chinned former IBF light welter titlist has faced world champions Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron, Junior Witter, Sharmba Mitchell and Paulie Malignaggi but N’dou could also be in tough tonight in the form of the challenge posed by Mwelase, who will hold substantial advantages in the height, strength and age departments.

28 year old Mwelase, 14-0 (12) certainly hasn’t engaged quite the lineup of talent littering N’dou’s resume but the southpaw has had a fair share of experience against decent opponents during his four year professional career following a superb amateur run. (more…)
