And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
Larry Holmes might be a HOF heavyweight. I still can't stand the jerk. I remember when he ran at the mouth saying that Rocky Marciano "couldn't carry my jock." I also remember how everything was racial to him. Gerry Cooney got more press 'cause he was white, blah, blah, blah. I used to root for him to get KTFO'ed, and totally loved it when Tyson did the honors.
But he topped himself on the Ali-Frazier III ESPN Classic special. Talk about sour grapes and being an old bitter jerk. He's talking about Ali in an interview, and starts by saying: "Ali was/is a great person, but..." Hell, I knew he was going to say something critical, like ".....but he didn't have a good right hand." Or, ".....but he left himself open for the left hook." But no. The bitter jerk finished it by saying: ".....but he was totally overrated." WTF?!?!? Who the hell do you think you are, you two-bit bum? Just 'cause you've always been jealous of the attention Ali got during his career, is no reason to be pot-shotting one of the greatest of all time.
I'm sorry, I just can't stand the jerk... I don't care HOW many buildings he put up in Easton, PA. I hope he tries a comeback against a Klitschko.

i agree that Holmes is a bit of an asshole at times, and extremely bitter, but his ass did have a right to complain during the Cooney fight

It's just the whole package. If a Shane Mosley were to complain about racism, I'd be all ears. And he'd probably be right (just an example). But coming from Holmes.... I just can't stomach anything that man has to say. And for the record, I think he got just as much press as Cooney did. But c'mon, since the day that white HW champions became scarce, the press has ALWAYS sought out the next "Great White Hope." It certainly wasn't a slight directed at Holmes, who I thought ALWAYS got his due from the press.

yea but the thing i found fucked up was that the president of the USA Ronald Reagan calls Cooney in his locker room to wish him luck, and then they announce Larry Holmes THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD before they announce the challenger lol that's fucked up

The announcement part... yeah... that's not cool. Someone's head should've rolled. But Reagan? C'mon. Reagan the boxing fan is free to call whomever he wants. Holmes shouldn't have been such a baby about it.

Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
I can understand Holmes' bitterness, but why should he direct it it Ali? Ali had nothing to do with Holmes' "status". Yes Holmes could be one of the most underrated Heavy Champs of all-time. But that is not Ali's fault.
Holmes has a right to be bitter about how King robbed him of tying Marciano's record against Spinks. And also about being underrated.
But his own odd personality was to blame for his less-than-Ali public image.
He couldn't have won however he turned: he whipped an old Ali, people hated him for it, and then he had to follow Ali as the next Champ.
He wasn't really the spitting image of a Champ.
I don't know if he's a jerk. BUt he sure is bitter. Worst of all, he's a Heavy Champ and he's accusing another Heavy Champ of being overrated? He should feel comraderie with ALL Heavy Champs, and not judge harshly anyone who held the belt. Not even Bruce Seldon...........errr, ummm

scratch that, he would bitch over and over about Don King, yet he'd always go back to him, he has no reason to feel bitter about anything to do with Don King cause he'd always go back to him, bringing iit upon himself after knowing that King is just a theif

Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
Holmes was never as good as Ali, he needs to accept that. Technically Ali was poor but he was great in all the other ways, heart, chin, stamina and classic opposition.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Sums it up nicely.
Holmes is looking at the technical aspect of boxing. There's more to it, of course, that's why we all watch it.
-
Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
seriously if boxing was all about technique.
Lets all follow Larry Holmes and be robots that fight the same way.
Ali used to beat him up in sparring in his mid age years, so how Larry could call him overrated is beyond me
-
Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
For me it's always been hard to separate the man from the boxer. I know Holmes was a good boxer. I don't think anybody argues that. But as someone mentioned... he didn't have the classic, career-making opponents that Ali did. And as yet another poster said, as a former HW champ, he shouldn't speak that way about a fellow former HW champ. So to me, Larry Holmes will always be the bitter old jerk I've always perceived him to be. And of Tyson's KO wins, none have made me happier than the one over Holmes.

Ken Norton
Earnie Shavers
Ossie Ocasio
Mike Weaver
Trevor Berbick
Leon Spinks
Tim Witherspoon
Michael Spinks (two time robbery)

Taking away the classic opposition because he clearly can't compete with Muhammad Ali's competition. But in all the other area's he showed as much Heart, Chin, Stamina, as Muhammad Ali did.
Check out his fights against Earnie Shavers 2, Renaldo Snipes, Ken Norton, Mike Weaver, ETC. For a mixture of all those things you mentioned there, Chin, Heart, Stamina.

A robot that fights the sameway are you kidding me seriously ? Larry Holmes relied on the jab alot but he could also brawl which he showed in many fights, he could also use movement very well like Muhammad Ali, and he could be the aggressor.
And he was a very good athletic Heavyweight, i think you need to watch more Larry Holmes fights before you make a comment like that again. And lastly Larry Holmes was a novice when he sparred with Muhammad Ali in 1972, he wasn't even a pro yet i don't believe. He was half the fighter he then compared to his peak in 1978.

You do realize my comment wasn't even about Larry Holmes fighting style right?
My comment was about Holmes statement saying because of Ali's style and not using the basics that he was overrated. So I said lets all follow what he said and fight the same way. Boxing is about styles and what makes a boxer unique and just because a fighter fights with his hands down or leans back with his hands down doesnt make him overrated which is what Holmes was basically saying. Thats why i made the lets all be robots comment.
I wasn't talking about his style i was talking about how close minded his statement about Ali was.
-
Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
I believe Larry Holmes to be one of the best Heavyweights ever, he is in my top 10. He carries a fairly large chip on his shoulder though and this is always evident in his interviews. He beat up on an old and tired Ali and he gets the blame for that, he had a close win against Norton but never got the chance to fight Foreman who retired prematurely before his reign. He missed the golden era of the 70's with Foreman, Frazier and Ali battling amongst themselves and then he eventually loses to Spinks who he thinks he beat twice but he loses both closely. He gets smashed by Iron Mike and that is pretty much it for Larry and i guess he feels hardly done by in the whole scheme of things.
Holmes need not worry to much, real boxing fans know he was good.
Get over it Larry and get on with life, stop whining about the past and what could have been, you were a great champion and nobody has forgotten it.

I am sure Holmes was the sparring partner for Ali when he fought Foreman.

Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
I don't like Holmes' quote about Marciano...I can kind of understand it though. You see athletes rip the all-time greats every now and then because they know if they are on their best behavior they still might catch shit for it or get rated lower than previous athletes. Guys like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods didn't seem to struggle with their greatness. They are great without having to brag AND while showing respect and IMO that enhances their greatness. But back to Holmes, he may have had similar trouble as Hank Aaron did while trying to break Ruth's lifetime homerun record.
As for Holmes' comments about Ali, I 100% agree....but of course it'll be chalked up to me not liking Ali, but so fucking what, I don't like him but maybe I view his accomplishments in a more clear rational and reasonable manner because I don't like him.
Also on another note NOBODY (at heavyweight at least) will break Joe Louis' title defense mark

Good post ...... I also agree that Larry is an all time great who would have been competitive against anyone who ever lived (he may not have won them all, but he'd have gone down with all guns blazing)
Still, I can;t help thinking that if Holmes didn't have the chip on his shoulder, the nagging sense of injustice, the conspiracy theories and the ego - he would not have been half the great fighter that he was.

....being able to take punches while leaning back all the way to India, hold behind the head, and flurrying from time to time doesn't (to me) constitute his best performance. It was a HUGE win but huge performance....no way! The wins over Liston, Williams, and Frazier in the rematch and the 'Thrilla' were better IMO.
Larry Holmes is also a victim of not having any great rivals

It was a huge win and performance, to say otherwise is just strange.

Re: And used to think L Holmes was a jerk BEFORE this week
I just wasn't impressed with it....sure Ali countered sharply and everything but he was still allowed to hold Foreman on the back of the head AND Foreman fought a dumb fight, that is as plain as day....whereas Liston and Williams were at Ali's mercy and he just demolished them with speed and skill.
Foreman's win over Frazier is still the most spectacular fight of that era IMO.....to rain down bombs like that on a guy who was undefeated and just beat the previously undefeated Ali still boggles my mind.

Which is why Ali's victory was even more impressive because he had lost a couple of fights, was nearing the end of his career and was fighting the most powerful heavyweight ever.

What makes boxing great is that it's more than just about jabs and hooks. There's a huge mental aspect to the sport, that many fans ignore. Yeah, Ali held Foreman in the back of the head. And yeah, Foreman fought a dumb fight. But Foreman was a feared monster who had intimidated, then destroyed every fighter he ever met. He annihilated the great Joe Frazier in 2 (3?) short rounds (don't remember off hand). Whereas Ali was, as Master said, near the end of his career. His strategy was brilliant, the setting exotic (Zaire), the outcome unthinkable. And Ali didn't win a controversial decision. He knocked Big George OUT. So Lyle, give the man his due on this one, huh?

Just a few quotes from the Easton Assasin.
"It's hard being black. You ever been black? I was black once - when I was poor."
"I came from a dirt farm, now I'm filthy rich."
"Don King doesn't care about black or white. He just cares about green."
“People think that I reached the top overnight; well, it took me fourteen years. I was twenty-nine before I really made it. I've had my jaws and hands broken. One arm is out of place. I've paid my dues in this business.”
“I don't want you guys to write, "Larry Holmes fought one too many."”
“All fighters are prostitutes and all promoters are pimps.”
"I decided to box my way out of the ghetto"
"There is no quit in me."
"King is an equal opportunity dirty bag, he screws everybody."

No sense in being angry at the guy for speaking the truth...Ali is more personality than boxer.
Hey I know my opinion of Ali goes over like a fart in a diving helmet but I just think Ali's persona, charisma, and his cultural icon status tend gloss over any flaws he had as a fighter and a person.
No boxer is perfect, no boxer is unbeatable, and no boxer is as good as people think/assume Ali was.
