and in fact you will usually run a distances quicker easier on the roads rather than the treadmill
run for 40 mins of the treadmill then 40 mins on the roads see the difference

i do dude, id do 8 miles in just over 50 mins on the road
and 6 in less than 40
yet in 40 minutes on the treadmill i run about 9 K which is less than 6 miles.
you see on a treadmill youre not really running you are just bouncing from one foot to the other and not pushing yourself forward, therefore you dont really control your own speed and its more knackering bouncing quicker than pushing forward more
perhaps if you are only running 8 miles in well over an hour you would be quicker on a treadmill :)

I put some big hills in my runs and sometimes I need to stop because the legs are burning so much. That never happens on a treadmill:p
There is a big difference when you are purposefully putting in hills than to running on normal flat road. I dont think about times, just distances. As long as I know I can cover a certain distance without having to stop, im happy. I think of running as a bank im putting miles in. When im in to it I like to aim for 20 miles a week, which is only 4, 5 mile runs. I run to get fit, not because I enjoy it. When I boxed, I did run every day and used to run our cliff paths, lots of steep hills. Im looking to build stamina.

I boxed from 97 to 2000, started when I was 19, had 3 seasons, 18 fights and 12 wins. I was ok, was strong and can take a shot. Didnt have many stoppages, although id regard myself as fairly powerfull, I could drop anyone in sparring but I think I may have smothered my own work when boxing. I was well in to it, never a day off training but over here in Guernsey we stagnate. We do well our first few seasons through our fitness and aggression but we only have one club and obviously we all spar each other day in day out, never seeing anything new, never getting challenged in sparring, so as the seasons go on, the lads on the mainland skillset over takes ours through the bigger variety of sparring partners. I was getting fed up of going nowhere and one day had an argument with my missus and punched a wall in temper and couldnt use my right hand for punching for about 6 months. Every time id think it was better id try some light shots on the bag and gradually get harder and then it just bruises again and the hand goes limp and is useless. I can see why Calzaghe had trouble stopping people later on whith his hand troubles. By the time my hand was better I was well in to work and overtime and could really do with out the nerves for weeks before fights. I started at 72 kilos and finished up at 78, through growing and doing weights. Im 106 at the moment and could probably lose 3 stone. Running is a bastard killer now but im just getting back in to it and the weights. I still feel when fit I could ruin anyone in sparring though;D

I am too old to box now, only white collor will have me and have my first fight in june
but if i had one bit of advice to give to any boxing fan, if you are young enough then do it
i regret not stepping in a gym 10 years ago and boxing when i could, id have still of been late to boxing but young enough, it is a big regret

Well I tell you what, it takes some bollocks to commit to a fight even when your young but to do it at a more mature age takes more bottle. Good on you!
Is it going to be to a decision? I know the participants of white collar can choose to have a decision or just fight for the sake of it.

I've never been 'Runner' I was doing 3 miles in just under 22 mins before xmas, but doubt I could run 3 miles now, since I have put on 2.5 stone :(

I've always been told that if you don't have the incline on at least 1.5 that the treadmill essentially does a lot of work for you. Even at an incline I will run faster on the treadmill simply b/c it will keep me at a constant rate. My speed varies a lot when I'm doing road work. I can't run more than 4 miles on a treadmill though. I get bored out of my mind.

Yeah, same here, unless there is a tv screen in front with something interesting on and you can actually forget almost what your doing and before you know it youve done 20 or 30 minutes.

I thought the 'joining the army' thread had become somewhat off kilter, but this one takes the biscuit. I have no idea what anyone is rabbiting on about here. So, it's a thread about heavyweights that has turned into something about running? Very obtuse.
I agree with VanChild's that running machines are boring. I prefer to cycle rather than run, but must admit that I do neither these days. My walk is more like a run for a regular person anyway. Rather brisk. I can probably walk several miles in about 10 minutes.

Does anyone think it wouldn't be to difficult to achieve 12.5 miles in 3 hours... So about 4 miles every hour??
I saw it on the video I posted about getting into the Australian special forces, and one of their tests was to walk 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) in 3 hours 15 minutes.... They had to do it with a 30 pound or 30 kg pack on, but i'm considering attempting it minus the pack...
Just wondering if you guys have ever actually timed yourself over a mile or two or whatever,,, and what do you think a reasonable time would be if you evened that over 12 miles.. i.e. obviously can't keep the same pace over 12 miles compared to 1 mile. So can't just multiply your 1 mile time by 12..

You want to talk about running or boxing training then there are places for that. However, a thread about the British heavyweight scene is not one of them.

The U.S. Infantry standard is 12 miles with a 45 pound rucksack and rifle in three hours. Last time I did a 12 miler I came in at 2 hours and 50 minutes. There was some jogging mixed in there though. I usually take my guys on a 4-6 mile ruck every Thursday. I use a 50-60 pound rucksack and we walk at a 15 minute/mile or less. I have to really concentrate to walk that fast but if you got a long stride its not that difficult.

On the cross trainer I run 12kh in 37 minutes, knackering but cannot run on the road as my knees will not take the impact. I think outside running is harder BTW.

Stop being fags, fuck the treadmill, 45 minute run with 3-4 sets of hill sprints will shed fat and build more fitness than some drawn out plad ever will! Unless you've got weak joints you've no excuse.
Whilst I enjoy running distance (some what,i fucking love to sprint!) it's not the most effecient way to run unless your goals are just marathon type endurance. If it comes down to fat loss and Aerobic/Anaerobic thresholds and recovery rates ('conditioning') then slow, long duration training is quite literally a long road to no where.
It gives minimal metabolism boost and only really works one energy system.
You do need a good Aerobic base, but you should quickly progress on from there.
And as for 12.5 miles in 3 hours, I'm not a distance runner and I xan run 13.3 miles in about 1 hour 30. Don't know about with a 15kg pack... I'd imagine I'd be fastet than 3hrs though... You'll ve fine with a bit of training.

What I meant is that I "run" on the cross trainer without using the handles on the arms. There is no impact on the knees but builds up the muscles. I also sprint on it and sweat buckets which feels great after, it is starting part that is the hardest, knowing the pain I will have to go through to feel good. :)

I think cycling is the technically correct term... but it sure as shit doesn't look like cycling! ;)
They've got there uses... especially if you can't run.
have you tried much rowing? Great for sprint type training, I'm not a huge fan of cardio machines as such... but if I had to use one for various reasons it would be the rowing machine.

I run on the stationary bike, kind of looks silly though. :p I do push ups on the treadmill, and sit ups on the stair climber.
