Totally agree. I think some are taking liberties in this thread (which has nothing to do with Calzaghe) just to pile on some hate. Calzaghe was a fine boxer with a lot of skill and beat both of the grand old men of boxing with no questions asked. Calzaghe had limited power, but showed true strength by being able to go 12 with fighters who were stronger than him and still outshine them over the long haul.

Oh, Kessler is shit... he lost to Ward! Oh, Jones is shit...he was blown out by Green! This must mean that Calzaghe was supershit, he couldn't stop anybody! No power, what a fraud! And he got knocked down by both Hopkins and Jones! What an imposter...

Oh i knew Roy Jones Jr was shot way before the Joe Calzaghe fight, and way before the Danny Green fight. I think that showed with the Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson, Anthony Hanshaw fights. And i was one of those calling the fight a farce.

And your fighter Joe Calzaghe even said he would never fight Roy Jones Jr, because now it wouldn't mean anything. And that was his own words not mine.

Then what does he do ? he fights the same man he said he wouldn't fight, and then retires on that win what a joke that was.

As for Mikkel Kessler i've never said he was bad, but i have been saying way before the Andre Ward fight, that no one truly knows how good Mikkel Kessler is. Because he only really fought one good opponent in Anthony Mundine.

And obviously anything he does now will effect the win Joe Calzaghe, had over him just like it would for any fighter. But the fact is he was dominated by Andre Ward in every single way, of course that isn't going to look good how could it ? when the best fighter Mikkel Kessler has fought was Anthony Mundine ?

And as for the other opposition well i covered that already, in my long rant above.

I think you make some interesting points Ice, but I don't think it is fair to hijack a thread talking about Green/Jones to rant about Joe Calzaghe. You could have always started another thread to do that and it would have probably sufficed. Maybe I'm just being grouchy, dunno.

It's always easy to criticize a fighter based on the future records of their opponents, but I do think it's a bit unfair. Of course, there are holes in Calzaghe's career, particularly pre-Lacy. But there are a few wins there, most notably Eubank. Calzaghe, did step it up towards the end and again I say it is all too easy to criticize with the benefit of hindsight. Kessler was the man everyone wanted him to fight and he did it. Hopkins was next and Calzaghe did it. I think fighting Jones was a waste of time and said it at the time, but Calzaghe dominated Jones in a way that no other fighter could do. Calzaghe did what he could with the fighters that were out there, he tried to make a Hopkins fight earlier and Hopkins priced himself out. Who else was there? It wasn't a rich division, just like Hopkins middleweight division wasn't teeming with class either.

Hopkins gets praised a lot for his resume these days, but come on now....Winky and Pavlik at LHW? That's just taking the mick! And most of his best wins are smaller men moving up as well. Calzaghe was a very good fighter, but I think he gets a very raw deal from you lot. No fighter has a perfect resume, but Calzaghe had the sense to get out while he could and so he gets picked apart by the sideline critics.
