I think that Mayweather is taking this fight because he has Cotto figured out. Before going to jail he said he would fight again in November or december. His conditioning will be an issue, but my guess is that he thinks he has Cotto figured out enough, after the last fight, that he can handle him impressively while not at his physical peak.

Last I remember, Canelo was in line to fight James Kirkland, Paul Williams, Victor Ortiz.

A Tale of Two Sons of Great Fighters:

Neither had an amateur career. Beyond that, they're different as night and day.

One has been coddled his entire career. Only recently has he been pitted against somewhat decent opposition, and even so... nothing to write home about.
