Manchester’s John Murray made a welcome return to boxing last night after a two year break and will no doubt be happy with his fourth round stoppage of Michael Escobar of Barcelona.

And, Wythenshawe’s Jimmy Kilrain Kelly had a testing fight against Ryan Toms of Middlesex in their eight round Light-Middleweight contest, but secured a points win to notch up his ninth pro win of nine.

The David Coldwell (Coldwell Promotions) fight-night at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester, hosted seven further contests which kept the lively crowd entertained on what was a chilly night in the UK.

Results:

Jimmy Kilrain Kelly (Wythenshawe) v Ryan Toms (Middlesex)
8 x 3 Light-Middleweight Contest

Toms got off the mark as soon as the bell signalled the start of round one and Kelly was slow to react – which may have unsettled him early on. He starts to settle in but sustains a cut to the bridge of the nose. Round four and Team Kelly shouts to their charge ‘Aim for the chest’. He duly obliges and his opponent stumbles back. Toms proves to be a handful for Kelly and it’s a testing contest for the Wythenshawe man – his nose now bleeding from inside. Toms has a swollen eye.

Kelly gets the win on Points 78-76

John Murray (Manchester) v Michael Escobar (Barcelona, Spain)
6 x 3 Light-Welterweight Contest

Murray had a slow start to this six rounder (originally scheduled for eight). Rounds one and two saw Escobar giving it all he had while a less-busy Murray took his time. But the returning Mancunian picked up the pace in round three while Escobar began to lose some momentum. Escobar was on the canvas in rounds three and four before failing to make the count with the third knockdown.

Murray gets the win by TKO round 4

Mark Heffron (Oldham) v Achilles Szabo (Hungary)

Heffron scored a first round TKO when Szabo could not get up from the count after taking a body-shot in the opening minute of the round.

Robbie Davies jnr (Kirkby) v Kevin McCauley (Brighton)
6 x 3 Welterweight Contest

Davies wins on Points 60-55

Jack Catterall (Chorley) v Renald Garrido (France)

Catterall wins on Points against Le Lion Garrido 59-56

6 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Gonzalez wins on points 60-55 against experienced ‘Mr.Reliable’.

Ryan Doyle (Gorton) v Valentin Marinov (Bulgaria)
4 x 3 Featherweight Contest

Ruthless Ryan Doyle had his opponent down in round one, dropping him another couple of times before finally stopping him in the third round.
