Will “The Bomber” Be Superman’s Kryptonite?

In a recent interview with British media, Tony “Bomber” Bellew said: “He [Adonis Stevenson] has got this moniker, this slogan, this Superman thing…but at the end of the day, the cold hard fact is he has been knocked out by a journeyman.

“A guy [Darnell Boone] who has won 20 fights and lost 20. I am better than Darnell Boone.”

Tonight, the Liverpool, England based fighter will have a chance to prove that he is in fact the kryptonite when he takes on Adonis “Superman” Stevenson in Quebec City for the WBC light-heavyweight title and Ring magazine honours.

According to Bellew’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, he said in a published interview that Stevenson is an overrated fighter.

“He beat a very unmotivated, demotivated [Tavoris] Cloud. He struggled against Don George. He got knocked out by Darnell Boone. I think Tony [Bellew] has a fantastic plan that can beat him,” said Hearn.

It’s his fighter’s preparation that is making Hearn very optimistic about coming back to England with a world title. “His preparation has been very low key. He’s been meticulous, he’s been fantastic…we’re calling this one the life changer, me and Tony,” said Hearn.

Some analysts are saying that the undercard between Sergey Kovalev and Ismail Sillakh is set up that night so that in the post-conference, a victorious Kovalev calls out Stevenson for that world title fight.

But that’s not fair to Bellew, who could potentially upset Stevenson. Most journalists at the Stevenson vs. Cloud post-conference were calling for Kovalev to be Superman’s next opponent.

When the Bellew bout was announced, there was lack of enthusiasm put on this fight in Canada.

Usually, the big fights for boxers that are signed to Groupe Yvon Michel promotions take place in Montreal but it was decided to scheduled the contest in Quebec City.

This lack of respect could work in favour of Bellew, who should look at this second chance at a world title as his last one. There is no doubt that his loss against Nathan Cleverly back in 2011 has left some questions surrounding Tony’s over-preparation for a big fight.

His own promoter has said that Bellew tends to hype himself so much before a bout that it drains him come fight night.

The fight will be broadcast live on HBO.
