  • Davis vs Garcia set for first big fight of 2023 – World Boxing Association

Davis vs Garcia set for first big fight of 2023 – World Boxing Association

Gervonta Davis and Hector Garcia will star in the first world title fight of 2023 this January 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington. The American will defend his WBA lightweight title against the Dominican in the night’s main event.

It will be the fourth defense for the 28-year-old southpaw fighter, who is one of the most impressive talents in boxing who combines his excellent quality with exceptional punching power, which has made him an opponent to be feared by anyone he faces.

Gervonta won his 135-pound belt in December 2019 when he defeated Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa by technical knockout in 12 rounds. He has defended it against Leo Santa Cruz, Isaac Cruz and Rolando Romero in three big fights and will now face another challenge in his career.

Garcia is the super featherweight champion of the organization and accepted the challenge of moving up one category for this great fight. The Dominican, also a southpaw, has a good background in amateur boxing and that has helped him to establish himself in the professional ranks.

The Caribbean has earned his place through hard work and consistency, first with a victory over Chris Colbert in his eliminator fight last February and then by beating Roger Gutierrez for the world super featherweight title in August.

Pre-fight promotional activities will take place this week and the official weigh-in will be held on Friday. Davis has 27 wins, no losses and 25 knockouts, while Garcia is also undefeated in 16 fights, with 10 knockouts.

  • WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE LANDS AT WEMBLEY ON YARDE’S BIG NIGHT – ITAUMA & HUTCHINSON GO FOR TITLES

WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE LANDS AT WEMBLEY ON YARDE’S BIG NIGHT – ITAUMA & HUTCHINSON GO FOR TITLES

THE WBA WORLD flyweight championship clash between the champion Artem Dalakian from Ukraine and Costa Rican challenger David Jiminez will take place in support of the forthcoming Artur Beterbiev-Anthony Yarde blockbuster at the OVO Arena, Wembley on January 28, live on BT Sport.

Ilford man Yarde challenges for the WBC, WBO and IBF world light heavyweight titles held by the undefeated Montreal resident, who holds a record of 18 wins with all 18 coming via a stoppage.

Dalakian, 35, won his world title belt in February 2018 with a points victory over Brian Viloria and has subsequently made five successful defences. He is unbeaten in 21 professional fights, with 15 of his wins coming via stoppage.

Jiminez, 30, has previously won the WBA Latino title and the WBA Gold world flyweight championship and is unbeaten in 12, with nine KOs.

Also on the bill and in title action against opponents to be confirmed shortly, light heavyweight star in the making Karol Itauma (9-0, 7 KOs) will fight for a first professional belt with the WBC International title being on the line and, also at light heavy, Willy Hutchinson (15-1, 11) will battle for the WBO Intercontinental championship.

A clutch of Queensberry’s top young prospects have secured a spot on the card.

The prospects on parade are 11-times National champion as an amateur, Charles Frankham, who was also a World Youth Championship bronze medallist and winner of gold at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

The 23-year-old Charles – known as ‘Boom Boom’ – is currently 6-0 in the professional ranks and making significant improvements under the guidance of new trainer Roger Lee.

Charles’ first cousin, Joshua Frankham, will also feature at Wembley, with the four-times National champion and former England international having his seventh professional fight after illness ruled him out of a November appearance at The O2.

Big-hitting cruiserweight Tommy Fletcher will have his fourth pro fight. The 20-year-old ‘Norfolk Nightmare’ has sent ripples through the division with three mighty knockouts to date, with two of them coming in the first round.

Last time out in November he poleaxed the Czech Jiri Krejci with a punishing left uppercut to close his show at The O2.

The 5-0 featherweight Umar Khan, 20, returns to action after impressing at York Hall in November with a shutout victory over Alexander Taylor, along with the hugely popular Brick Lane southpaw Khalid Ali.

The 4-0 ‘Bengal Tiger’ was last in the ring back in September when he outpointed Dario Borosa via a 60-54 margin at York Hall.

Another welterweight, Sean Noakes, will have his fourth fight as a professional after a successful first year of three four-rounders that resulted in two shutout victories and a second round stoppage for the Maidstone man.

Tickets for Beterbiev vs Yarde at the OVO Arena, Wembley on Saturday 28 January 2023 are on sale now from AXS.com.

  • INJURY STRIKES ON PARKER’S BIG NIGHT

INJURY STRIKES ON PARKER’S BIG NIGHT

ZACH PARKER’S SHOT at the WBO Interim world super middleweight title against John Ryder was aborted at the end of the fourth round when the Derby man was unable to continue due to a hand injury.

In what was shaping up to be an exciting and evenly-contested fight, the previously unbeaten Parker appeared to be edging the rounds and was ahead 39-37 on two of the scorecards, with the other being even.

It was a bitter disappointment for the fans inside The O2 and for Parker, who was making confident strides towards full world title contention.

“Zach started well, got behind the job well and was peppering me a bit there,” reacted Ryder afterwards. “I felt like the tide might be starting to turn and I was getting more on top, but these things happen in boxing. It is a bad injury for him and it feels like half a robbery victory for me.”

“Obviously I am absolutely gutted,” added Parker. “It was at the start of the round, I hit him with an uppercut and you can see from my hand that it is out now. He is obviously a good lad who will go on and do good things in boxing and I will come back stronger.

“I was warming into the fight and it was becoming a good fight. When the injury happened at the start of that last round I kept having to move because every time I jabbed him it was hurting and clicking.”

Hamzah Sheeraz is the new Commonwealth middleweight champion and still WBC Silver title holder following a brutal destruction of River Wilson-Bent.

Sheeraz, now 17-0, set about his Coventry opponent right from the off with spearing jabs to which Wilson-Bent had no reply. Sheeraz’s dominance extended into the second round and Wilson-Bent was put down and referee Victor Loughlin decided he had seen enough with 2.55 on the clock.

A blitz of body shots from Sam Noakes in the fourth round saw the Maidstone man realise his goal of a perfect 10 wins and 10 KOs with the stoppage of the previously unbeaten Calvin McCord to win the Commonwealth lightweight title.

It was also a defence of Noakes’ WBC International Silver belt and, after pretty much dominating the first three, the 25-year-old went for the jugular in the fourth and McCord went to the canvas on four occasions before referee Victor Loughlin had seen enough after 2.14 of the round.

Dennis McCann is the new Commonwealth super bantamweight champion following a systematic breaking down of Joe Ham.

In what was a mature performance, The Menace was more measured and patient in his work from his typically wide stance. Ham had few answers and was in trouble on each occasion McCann chose to let his hands go in the fourth, fifth and eighth.

The eighth turned out to be the last when a right uppercut stunned the Scot and the follow-up assault convinced referee Marcus McDonnell to wave it off with 2.28 on the clock.

McCann moves to 14-0 and a third professional title following on from his WBO Youth and WBC International Silver successes.

‘Big Bang’ Pierce O’Leary won his first professional title – the WBC International super lightweight belt – with a rugged, hard-fought victory over Emmanuel Mungandjela.

The Dubliner moved to 11-0 and, at first, it looked like it might be a speedy night’s work when a massive right from O’Leary saw the Namibian touch down.

Mungandjela, while for the most part being overwhelmed, still chose to engage in a firefight and O’Leary took more shots than his trainer Alan Smith would have liked. He actually recovered well in the fifth round and enjoyed some success, but then ended up grounded again just before the bell following a left hook topping up a big right.

Mungandjela continued to show remarkable defiance and bravery, looking like he might be out in the ninth when he was rocked again by the right hand of O’Leary. He saw it through until the end when the scorecards read 99-90, 99-89 and an unlikely 96-92.

Tommy Fletcher made it a professional treble with a win in his third fight against Jiri Krejci. He also made quick work of his Czech opponent and the fight was over when the Norfolk Nightmare ripped in a short and devastating left uppercut that left Krejci out for the count after 2.19 of round one.

Sonny Liston Ali successfully negotiated his fifth professional fight and comfortably outpointed Georgi Velichkov, winning all six rounds.
