So do you have to prove you are ok or at least sane somehow to get a gun or gun license or dont licenses exist out there?
From here it seems that any fool can carry one around, so the regulations must be very lax.

I live in a near-commie state, Hawaii.
VERY strict regulations. Must pass a test, can only buy one handgun a year, tough to get a carry permit etc.
I more or less ignore them. What's the old saying? I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by six?
The regs vary from state to state, by a lot.
The one reg I think is most useful and folks who fear guns have the biggest problem with is concealed carry. Can you imagine being a criminal and not knwoing if your target is armed or not? Or if the next guy over is? Can you imagine how much more cautious you'd be?

In Hawaii no ongoing shooting/competency requirement and very tough to get a carry permit so most guns are legally used only for home protection.
Again it varies greatly from state to state. When I lived in Pennsylvania, as an example, hunting was extremely popular so everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I knew had family members competent with the use, repair, modification of firearms. Much easier to get a carry permit there. The burden is on the state to demonstrate why you are a danger. That kind of law is called "shall issue."

LEGAL gun owners are some of the best citizens this country has. Its the criminals you've got to worry about.
I plan on getting a pistol at some point in time. I've shot enough that I should already have one....but expensive booze is a staple that I cannot live without!
There is a better argument for the 2nd than defense of personal property and protection. An armed populace is the best defense to tyranny. Yes it comes with a certain acceptance of unattended consequences but homicide in the U.S. is much more a cultural issue than a gun ownership one. You might be able to decrease the efficiency of homicide in this country but you would do so at the expense of the law abiding citizen's liberty. I'd imagine the folks in Syria sure wouldn't mind having a few decent assault rifles right now.
