Friday night, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, Hennessy Sports hosted a fight-night which saw Manchester Heavyweight – Tyson Fury, win decisively on points over Rich Power of Michigan , in an eight round International Heavyweight Contest.

But, topping the seven-bout bill was Irish-born John O’Donnell of Shepherds Bush and Terrance ‘Heat’ Cauthen of New Jersey, USA, as they fought a twelve round Welterweight Contest which saw O’Donnell win on points.

This Showtime Sports / ShoBox televised event was screened across America.

Tyson Fury (Manchester, England) v Rich Power (Michigan, USA)
8 Round International Heavyweight Contest

‘Super’ Rich Power deserves full credit for going the distance with Fury after he (Power) took the fight at a weeks’ notice. Bigger Fury concentrates on landing the right early on in the fight and finds success with it throughout the contest, but despite seeming to be heavy punches (and on-target) Power soaks them up.

But it’s the added weight of Fury that looks to be sapping the energy of Power, as they grapple together in a messier round three. Power dabs at his head during the fourth as they clash heads and he must wonder whether a previous cut in sparring is ‘holding-up’.

The American regularly stands in front of Fury, with gloves low, letting Fury punch him (!) as if to say ‘come on – hit me, I can take it!’ He goes down to a knee in the fifth from a body-blow but Referee Hinds doesn’t count it. Power looks tired by the end of the fifth round, but still keeps going to the end of the contest.

Fury gets the points win (80-72) and improves to 12 wins (9 by KO) while Power suffers his first loss – dropping to 12 wins (9 by KO) and 1 loss.

John O’Donnell (Shepherds Bush, England) v Terrance Cauthen (New Jersey, USA)
12 Round International Welterweight Contest

Irish-born O’Donnell got off to a good start against experienced Terrance ‘The Heat’ Cauthen and – adopting centre of ring for much of the fight – always looked in control.

Southpaw O’Donnell landed with some neat right hooks and although Cauthen answered with some on-target shots of his own, he never looked to be making his mark on a clearly focussed O’Donnell.

The London-based Boxer stalked Cauthen for the majority of the rounds and still looked fresh as they began the twelfth and final frame.

Referee Ken Curtis was the only judge for this contest and gave it 118-112 to O’Donnell who is now poised to fight Michael Jennings for the vacant British Welterweight Title.

O’Donnell improves to 24 wins (11 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) while Cauthen drops to 35 wins (9 by KO) 7 losses (3 by KO).

Lee Purdy (Colchester) v Theophilus Tetteh (Accra, Ghana)
8 Round Welterweight Contest

Lee ‘Lights-out’ Purdy scored a points win over Ghanaian Tetteh in this eight rounder, but it looked like he might have got the stoppage mid-way through the contest as Tetteh’s legs were all over the place after he took some on-target shots from the Colchester man.

Purdy’s corner urged their charge to ‘go after’ his opponent because it seemed he was ‘finished’, but Purdy held back and Tetteh recovered somewhat, to keep going.

You wouldn’t have guessed it was the final round as they came out for the eighth (!) It looked more like mid-round action as the work-rate dropped and again – Purdy’s corner urged him to ‘go for it’. But Purdy gets the points decision (78-75) and improves to 14 wins (7 by KO) 2 losses and 1 draw.

Tetteh drops to 9 wins (2 by KO) 5 losses and 2 draws.

Daniel Cadman (Waltham Abbey) v Matty Hough (Walsall)
6 Round Super-Middleweight Contest

Cadman made short work of Walsall Boxer Hough who was on the canvas in the first round. He got up for the count but took a couple of hard shots to the temple area and was stopped just inside the opening round.

‘Mr. Slick’ Cadman wins by first round stoppage and improves to 13 wins (4 by KO) 5 losses (2 by KO) while Hough drops to7 wins (1 by KO) 5 losses (5 by KO) and 1 draw.

Phill Fury (Lancaster) v Andrew Pattterson (Birmingham)
4 Round Light Middleweight Contest

It was a messy fight between these two – Fury launching sometimes wildly swinging shots and Referee Jeff Hinds warning him a couple of times to keep punches up. Towards the end of the contest – Fury was ‘winding up’ the shots in taunting fashion at his Brummy opponent, but ‘Paddy’ remained undeterred. Fury gets the 40-36 points win.

‘Intense’ Fury improves to 6 wins (1 by KO) and no losses, while Patterson drops to 1 win (1 by KO) 11 losses (2 by KO) and 2 draws.

John Ryder (Islington) v Ben Deghani (Glasgow)
4 Round Middleweight Contest

Debutant – ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, had a quick nights’ work as he faced Iranian-born Deghani. Deghani suffered a cut inside the opening first half-minute and a big uppercut rocked back the head of the man from Glasgow.

Ryder ‘went after’ his opponent pressuring him in the corner until Referee Hinds stepped in to stop the contest mid-way through the first.

Ryder wins by first round stoppage, while Deghani drops to 1 win (1 by KO) 5 losses (4 by KO).

Tyler Goodjohn (Haddenham) v Dale Hutchinson (Sheffield)
4 Round Light-Welterweight Contest

There was big (and noisy!) crowd support for debutant Goodjohn as he faced last minute opponent Hutchinson.

Hutchinson – whose nose was bloody from an early blow – was backed up against the ropes under an onslaught from the Haddenham Man when Referee Hinds stepped in to stop the contest just inside round two.

Goodjohn will no doubt be thrilled with his first pro-win by KO, while Hutchinson drops to no wins 4 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw.
