IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods’s promoter Dennis Hobson has agreed to offer a $50,000 side bet to Saturday’s Bolton Arena challenger Glen Johnson.
“I’ll put my money where my mouth is,” said Hobson. “If Johnson wants a side-bet I’m game. I bet $50,000 that Clinton will beat him Saturday night.”
At Thursday’s final press conference, the challenger tried to goad Woods into a sidebet where Johnson would merely have to avoid getting knocked out to collect.
However, Hobson said: “Johnson basically wanted to put a bet on himself where he’d still win the bet even if he lost the fight! I’m very confident that Clinton wins this in impressive style - I can see Johnson getting trapped and overwhelmed on the ropes and the ref stopping it- but Clinton could just as well win on points.
“But I’m a betting man and I’ll take a wager with any member of Team Johnson that Clinton walks out of Bolton still IBF champion of the world. I’ve been trying to find good odds on Clinton all week, but he’s the odds-on favourite.”
“Without Fight Academy, no-one would have heard of Glen Johnson.” continued Hobson. “How soon Team Johnson have forgot that it was only due to the efforts of myself and my team which convinced the IBF to sanction the November 2003 Woods v Johnson fight for the vacant title in the first place.
“I think I’ve already given Team Johnson enough of a helping hand without agreeing to hand over $50,000 even if loses this weekend.”
