Miguel Cotto Training With Freddie Roach For Upcoming Fight

Without much press, Miguel Angel Cotto has begun to train for his October 5 fight with the help of future hall-of-fame trainer Freddie Roach. The three time champion of the world will face Dominican pugilist Delvin Rodriguez at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Although this news is surprising, it’s not unexpected for those who have been following Freddie Roach’s career. Ever since Cotto burst into the scene with his impressive victory against Zab Judah (by TKO) and Shane Mosley (by unanimous decision) , Roach has mentioned in past interviews his interest in training Cotto.

However at that time, when Cotto was making a name in the professional boxing scene, Roach was already very busy with his protégé, Manny Pacquiao. Also, Cotto was being trained by Evagelista Cotto (the fighter’s uncle) at that time.

Now, that all the parties involved are able to come together, Cotto is currently training at The Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, CA This is the first time that the Puerto-Rican fighter, who holds an impressive record of 37 wins and 4 losses with 30 knockouts under his belt, will be training outside of Orlando. The eternal city of amusement parks has been Cotto’s base for his past preparations leading up to a bout.

But what does that mean for Manny Pacquiao?

According to Roach, he will be making his way to the Philippines after the Cotto bout on October 5 to reunite with Pacquiao to oversee and complete the training for his principal prodigy.

In the meantime, Pacquiao has already begun to train without Roach for his upcoming bout that will take place on the 23rd of November against Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios in Macao, China.

Cotto has mentioned in recent interviews that he sees his career coming to an end in the near future. He plans to fight three more times before he officially retires and his bout against Rodriguez would kick off his farewell tour.

You can watch the Cotto vs. Rodriguez bout on HBO.
