  • Sarah Bormann Outlasts Yuko Kuroki to Capture the WBA Minimumweight World Title – World Boxing Association

Sarah Bormann Outlasts Yuko Kuroki to Capture the WBA Minimumweight World Title – World Boxing Association

In a tense and hard-fought battle, Germany’s Sarah “Babyface” Bormann (21-1, 7 KOs) captured the WBA minimumweight world championship by scoring a split-decision victory over Japan’s Yuko Kuroki (25-9-2, 10 KOs) on Saturday, October 18, at the Wandsbeker Sporthalle in Hamburg, Germany.

The judges’ scorecards reflected just how close the contest was: 93-97 for Kuroki, and 97-93, 96-95 for Bormann, giving the German fighter a razor-thin win in front of her home crowd.

It was a true clash of styles from the opening bell. Kuroki showcased her trademark hand speed, accuracy, and slick movement early on, clearly taking the first two rounds with sharp jabs and crisp combinations while keeping Bormann at bay with effective lateral footwork.

But starting in the third, Bormann began to apply relentless pressure. Though her style was more direct and less refined, her body attack slowly wore Kuroki down. The German champion-in-waiting closed the distance effectively, and her aggression forced exchanges that disrupted the Japanese boxer’s rhythm.

At one point, Bormann received a warning from the referee for hitting on the break, as tempers flared and the action became increasingly physical — a source of frustration for Kuroki’s corner.

The middle rounds were evenly contested, with Kuroki trying to reassert her speed advantage while Bormann banked on sheer physicality and endurance. In the ninth, an accidental head clash opened a cut on Bormann’s forehead, adding a layer of drama heading into the final stretch.

Both fighters dug deep in a wild tenth round, trading in close quarters without a clear edge. When the final bell rang, the tension in the arena was palpable. Moments later, Bormann was declared the winner by split decision — a triumph that earned her the WBA world title and reaffirmed her place among Europe’s top female fighters.

  • Kuroki and Bormann Battle for Minimumweight Supremacy – World Boxing Association

Kuroki and Bormann Battle for Minimumweight Supremacy – World Boxing Association

This Saturday, October 18, the Wandsbeker Sporthalle in Hamburg, Germany, will host a long-awaited world title unification bout in the women’s minimumweight division. Japan’s Yuko Kuroki, reigning WBA world champion, will square off against Germany’s Sarah “Babyface” Bormann, the WBO titleholder, in a 10-round contest promising skill, experience, and high-level action.

Kuroki (25-8-2, 10 KOs), 34, enters the bout with a decorated résumé built across the Asian circuit. With more than 30 professional fights to her name, the Japanese standout has faced elite opposition and shown remarkable adaptability. Her style blends mobility, sharp accuracy, and a disciplined defense — qualities that have kept her at the top of the 105-pound division for over a decade.

Bormann (20-1, 7 KOs), 35, brings a record defined by tactical discipline and close, hard-fought wins. The WBO champion will look to capitalize on home support to dictate the pace and range of the fight. Her lone defeat came early in her career, and she has since built an impressive winning streak that has established her as one of Europe’s most consistent champions.

Both fighters come off recent decision victories, setting the stage for a technical and strategic showdown. Kuroki, with deeper experience in long-distance fights, may aim to wear down her opponent as the rounds progress, while Bormann will seek to control the distance and close rounds with precision.

Beyond the belts, this fight represents the clash of two proud boxing schools — Japan’s, known for discipline and refined technique, and Germany’s, which has steadily earned respect on the women’s circuit with smart, well-trained athletes.

  • Yuko Kuroki Retains WBA Crown with Commanding Win Over Nanako Suzuki – World Boxing Association

Yuko Kuroki Retains WBA Crown with Commanding Win Over Nanako Suzuki – World Boxing Association

Veteran southpaw Yuko Kuroki showed once again why she remains a force in women’s minimumweight boxing, turning in a masterclass to defeat fellow Japanese contender Nanako Suzuki by unanimous decision Thursday night at Tokyo’s iconic Korakuen Hall, in the main event of Phoenix Battle 138.

Kuroki (now 25-8-2, 9 KOs) used every ounce of her experience to control the pace across ten rounds against a younger, aggressive challenger. The scorecards told the story: 97-93, 98-92, and a dominant 99-91 — all in favor of the reigning champ.

Suzuki (9-4, 3 KOs), just 25 years old, came out with urgency, trying to close the distance and turn the fight into a gritty exchange. But Kuroki, ever composed, relied on her sharp right jab and pinpoint countershots to neutralize the pressure and gradually break her opponent’s rhythm.

With this victory, the 34-year-old Kuroki successfully defended her WBA minimumweight world title for the first time since claiming the belt in 2024. The performance was a clear statement: while time may be moving forward, Kuroki’s skills remain sharp and her place at the top of the division is still secure.

It was a night of quality boxing in Tokyo — and once again, Kuroki left the ring with her hand raised and her legacy intact.

Kuroki captures WBA minimumweight championship  – World Boxing Association

Yuko Kuroki won the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) minimumweight world belt after a 10-round unanimous decision over Ye Kyeng Seo on Tuesday at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

After 10 rounds of action, the home fighter earned 96-94 scorecards from all three judges to win the pioneering body’s 105-pound belt.

Kuroki’s goal was clear. She wanted to become world champion again after losing her championship last January to Eri Matsuda by split decision. Getting this opportunity, she knew she did not have an easy challenge against the Korean but she was able to take the victory.

It was a fight with good exchanges and in which both fighters lived great moments, but Kuroki knew how to take advantage of the small details to tip the balance in her favor and become world champion again.

With the victory, the 33-year-old Japanese fighter reached 24 wins, while she has 8 defeats, 2 draws and 10 knockouts. In the case of Kyeng Seo, her record is 7 wins, 1 loss, 3 draws and 5 knockouts.

  • Yuko Kuroki will make her first world title defense  – World Boxing Association

With a date set for January 12, 2024, Japanese World Boxing Association atomweight champion Yuko Kuroki will defend her crown against Eri Matsuda, also from Japan, at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Kuroki’s most important achievement came in a unification bout last August 5 against the emblematic Mexican pioneer Montserrat Alarcon in what was a close fight.

After a complicated professional debut in December 2008, where Kuroki lost, she began to build a winning path that led her to become WBC junior atom champion in her eighth fight on July 8, 2011. Then, she failed to win the minimum WBA world championship against Etsuko Tada on March 3, 2013, later she won the belt, which she lost after 5 defenses against Momo Koseki in 2017.

29-year-old Eri Matsuda made her pro debut on August 20, 2018 and despite her little experience and breaks, she has already starred in championship bouts that put her in top spots as she is in the WBA world rankings.

June 13, 2023 was her last ring appearance against Nanako Suzuki where Matsuda emerged triumphant and raised her record to 6 wins with 1 knockout, 1 loss and 1 draw.

On her side, champion Yuko Kuroki has 22 wins with 9 knockouts, 7 losses and 2 draws.
