Boxing In Mexico: Cazares, Torres Win World Title Fights

Last night at Centro de Convenciones in Tlanepantla, Hugo Fidel Cazares and Ana Maria Torres were victorious, each retaining world title belts in explosive fashion.

WBA super fly ruler Cazares, 32-6-2 (23), from Los Mochis, cemented his hold on the title with a seventh round finishing of NABA boss Everardo Morales, 34-15-2 (23), of Mexico City.

The normally durable Morales had won three straight since an unsuccessful Interim WBC title challenge a year ago but the 33 year old was no match for his opponent, one of the best super flyweights in the world.

Cazares dropped Morales in the seventh before causing the stoppage at 1:00 of the frame and has now defended the WBA strap on two occasions.

Mexico City’s “La Guerrera”, Ana Marie Torres, 21-3-2 (13), made the fourth defense of her second reign as WBC super fly champion, crushing the title aspirations of Colombian southpaw Olga Julio, 7-8-1 (3).

The outgunned Julio, who has never beaten an opponent with a winning record, was outclassed from the start and was knocked out in the fourth.

Torres, who stands atop the world super flyweight rankings, runs her win streak to six bouts and hasn’t lost in nearly three years.
